I was watching Carolina on Theremin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJACNHHuGp0) and I could notice how "thick" Etherwave sounds. I myself have only the Theremini but I'd love to get this organic thick sound on the Theremini. Is using effects the only way to this?

Jim

To be fair, she is actually using a $1,500.00 Etherwave Pro (discontinued).
One easy way of getting a deeper sound out of the Theremini is via an external EQ pedal.
Something like this would do it:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/10BandEQ
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BEQ700
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Bass10EQ
It would only work in mono, but you can always add stereo effects after the EQ.

So you think it's a matter of applying a low pass filter on the output?
I could also feed the output to the little phatty and see how it goes from there. It's just that the sound seems so ... digital

Not a Low Pass... an Active Graphic EQ.jimbourekas wrote:So you think it's a matter of applying a low pass filter on the output?
I suggested the above EQs as they can boost the frequency areas needed to sound fuller, by as much as +12dB.
They can also gently reduce any frequency ranges that aren't to your liking.

Creating sounds using the waveforms that can be scanned and using the LFO to slowly animate them will also make for fatter sounds.
Animoog 1, and Etherwave were scannable in the first versions of the firmware, and the latest version added several more. A touch of delay will help as well.
I like creating sounds that let the left hand affect the wavescan as well, which allows me more control over the animation, and a more complex, evolving sound.

There is a rather neat way if you are layering the sounds or using a looper pedal, though for this to work you need to utilize the theremini's pitch correction. Record your first sample with the A @ 440 & then before you do the next layer up or down the A by a couple of cents. I think you will appreciate this if you give it a try.

I send the Theremini through a FreqBox MF107 and the sound grows and growls!
