Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
Re: Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
I've got some questions for the analog oscillocopes owners :
About the probe :
1. i see there are different kinds, actives, passives, what the difference between the two ?
2. I see there are 1x, 10x and 100x probes, what's the difference between the three, which one should i use for the sub 37 and for let's say a 50 mhz oscilloscope ?
3. If my oscillator is 50 mhz should i use a 50 mhz probe or can i use a 100 mhz or even a 10 mhz one ?
4. Is the connecting on the probes all the same (can i buy any probe (according to the setting 1, 2,3) for any analogic oscillator ?)
Thanks for your answers.

There are lots of smartphone apps that provide basic oscilloscope functionality (Free!) all the way up to pro-level features for $29.99. There's even one for $399.99.
Just search "oscilloscope" or "lissajous".

Yes but having a hardware analog oscilloscope instead of having a software oscilloscope is the same difference between having a VST of a mini moog and a real mini moog.... If we are on a sub 37 forum, it's because we love analogic machines, right ?
Re: Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
@qubits, that may be true. But if you're only going to look at the output of the synth, then try a app scope first to see if it's alll that interesting to you. Back when I had a modular PAIA synth and an X/Y there was a lot of cool stuff to look at - lissajous patterns! You won't see that with the setup you're planning.

Sorry, i stay 100% analog.
Re: Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
That's nice, but you won't see anything like that unless you crack your case open and get an X/Y scope.

To answer your question about the oscilloscope program settings QUbits, here's a screen grab:
I think you'd be hard pressed to beat a real oscilloscope's responsiveness with a software scope, but there are some nice perks to software insofar as the low cost and recording capability
For anyone interested, here's a (retro?) montage of some SUB 37 oscillator shapes following the analogous WAVE knob positions. The "pure" saw happens just before you start to hear the square wave mixed in, which is pretty visible here. The 50% duty cycle square wave is in the upper right. In the middle, the pink noise generator and filter self-oscillation (sine wave) are shown, along with pulse width modulated beyond the maximum knob setting close to the point of choking off. Thank you, interresting.
I've decided to go for this two channels 20 MHZ vintage oscilloscope from the 70's. It got XY and can do lissajous paterns. I'll post pictures soon if everything works fine.
Cheers.

X/Y? Yeah! kick ass!!!
This is similar, if not exactly the model, I used to have ~40 year's ago

Re: Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
only disadvantage of old 70s or 80s oscilloscopes is that they have the old CRT tubes in them, firing some nice radiation your way. Which is why the units are so deep in size.
i was elated to see CRTs phased out and replaced by LCD. i could not wait to get them the hell outa my studio. I used to have 3 big Sony CRT monitors in the 90s in my studio. I used to call them "cancer boxes". i remember my face used to get warm from sitting in front of them, only God knows how it was slowly cooking my brain, and burning out my eyes, but i had to get work done, you know how it is. There was no other option. One was for our old Mackie D8b screen and the other two for Cubase. And then there was the TV running constantly as well. so thats 4 CRTs actually hehe we never had to turn the heater on in the studio thats for sure. I remember just hearing about the coming of LCD technology and shouting "finally...about time Halleluiah!" and being the first in the queue to get some.
i sure wouldnt let another CRT through the door in this day and age. the LCD Oscilloscope option looks far better if i was you.

Re: Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
It would be more prudent to concern oneself with improper disposal of a CRT monitor than any type of radiation emissions from one.
A CRT monitor did negatively affect the stability of my Theremin though.

Re: Analogic Oscilloscope on a Sub 37
Hi novice scope user here so have a few basic questions:
I have an old, calibrated Tektronix 465M (a 100 MHz dual-channel portable scope) and after reading this thread I am a bit confused so can I simply connect a BNC to a 1/4 phone plug and connect it directly from the Sub 37 headphone jack to the X bnc connector of the scope and setting it to DC and 1v? i.e. not using a probe? would there be an impedance issue?
Secondly, since it has dual channels, how would I utilize them?
TIA, SLarry
