How useful is "audio in" on your synth?

Post by grokostimpy » Thu Apr 30, 2015 2:23 pm

Here is a question:
Does anyone use the "audio-in" jack on their synth?

As I understand, it's a way to route other sources through the synth's filter, but I can't find any examples of people using this method on the internet. An example I would be curious to see is if the sub37 sends midi to an external synth module, and that module sends another two-oscillator voice back to the sub37 audio-in - would that make a 4 oscillator synth sound? And would it even sound good?

Thank you!

Ive done that with my DSI mopho. midi out from sub37 to mopho, audio out from mopho to audio in on sub37. Sounds really big.

This is an audio clip of some drums I recorded coming from the Analog Rytm into the Sub 37. I recorded this before I knew how to use the Sub 37 so it only since occurred to me that I could have the Sub 37 sync to the Rytm with midi and have the lfo's to filter, and envelope looping etc sync to the rythm of the Rytm, very useful. I'll try get an example recorded this weekend. In the example you hear it's all free handed manipulation of the filters and e.g's so prob not the best example..

I've done basically the same thing using my Bolsa Bass as an additional voice. It can fatten up the sound in a subtle way. I'd like to be able to do the same with my Werkstatt, but I'd need a MIDI to CV converter.

All the time! This is where a lot of the 'good stuff' lives.

Here's something from a few months back, one of my evening improvs where I sent a string pad sound through the Sub37 to create the downward sweeping noise effect that stays in-time with the step-sequence.

I have the audio out from a Sub Phatty routed to the Sub 37 audio in and have them both MIDIed to the same keyboard controller. So it's basically a 4 oscillator Sub 37 and it can sound awesome. It can be as subtle as just adding a raw oscillator to the mix. It can also get interesting and produce complex evolving sounds when using a lot of modulation on both synths.

Yep - using it alot ever since first discovering it. I now have two jacks always on standby and a few presets saved so that it is very quick to just process drums from the MPC, add OSC's from a Minibrute or anything else from the DAW. Have done the same with the Minibrute EXT input too and both are saved into my default template in Cubase. Sending signals through each synth's filters and envelopes adds so many possibilities and is great fun too. Highly recommended.

+1 audio in is one of my favorite features of the sub37

i create feedback loops with mics & moogerfoogers+cp251 with channel faders down, then use a pre-fader aux send to feed the external sounds into the sub37, then dial up the amount of external audio needed in the mixer section

sending the sub37 audio out directly to the audio in with aux sends creates it's own sort of feedback, with both low frequency and high frequency self oscillation notes...

lots of fun, this device!

Being a novice both on Moog and synths I´m enjoying playing around with my Sub37.
Just got my first moogerfooger this week - a Freqbox. When connecting it i got a bit confused; at first I thought I could use the Freqbox VCO as an Audio In to sub 37. Now I understand the Freqboz needs an audio in to generate the tones.

However; would it be possible to feedback the sub37+freqbox back into the sub37´s audio in?
Or would it blow the whole thing up? Poff!

Hey AsleG, welcome to the forum!

Many people do what you're trying to achieve. If I remember correct, there is an output for just the oscillator signal of the MF-107 to be used. Use that one as well as the pitch input for controlling the oscillator note.
Anyone correct me! :)

Hi stiiiiiive!

Thanks for answering. So MF-107s OSC OUT into SUB37s AUDIO IN, ok.
The pitch input isn´t as clear to me (sorry if being slow);
In the MF107 manual there is a figure 18 - Using the FreqBox with Voyager/VX-351 where it says Voyager Key CV to (MF107) Freq. In (second from the left upper row). This is confusing me as the SUB37 only got audio and midi out, the rest connections are input.
Or am I missing something?

Thanks! :)

You're not missing anything. I was :D I have a Little Phatty with CV out, but Sub37 does not propose that option.
You may want to convert MIDI into CV with a dedicated device ... or you may want to try this with anoy other MIDI analogue synth.

I route my two MF-107's in the audio-in of my voyager. Very useful input jack!
