Soubd lab Junip drum sound?

Post by unfiltered37 » Sun Oct 12, 2014 3:50 pm

I was checking out the song by Junip, and have been trying to figure out the great drum sound. I checked out the studio version of the song they played, and it is not the same, so it is obviously some MF's after the mics. I tried to get the snare sound with a delay to no avail. Any ideas on what is going on?

If you're talking about the real drum kit sound, it seems highly compressed and equalized with the mids boosted.
Maybe your'e talking about something else entirely ? I don't know.

Here's the studio version. It sounds quite different.

The sound lab version is definitely compressed, but I think it might have a very short delay or spring reverb and distortion. The kit sounds a lot more electronic in the sound lab.

In the video at the Moog Sound Lab, there is another musician hitting two Sambago Bells (plastic Latin percussions) in sync with the snare of the drummer. Maybe that's what you're hearing ?

I only see that the real drum kit sound, it seems highly compressed and loud, it does not get in harmony with other instrument. By the way, which one you are exactly mentioning here ? :)

it's subtle, but it does not sound natural, ie just a mic and compressor. it's compressed, but it has perhaps a little delay or distortion on it. If you hear the studio version, it is quite different. The sound lab version sounds more electronic, and I have not heard a similar drum sound before from acoustic kit. I think any attempt trying to nail it down will be futile if no can even hear what i am talking about.
