Sub 37 new keyboard exchange possible?

Post by monokit » Mon Sep 15, 2014 8:59 am

Hi,

i really like my new Sub 37, but i am very dissappointed about the keyboard. I think Moog used the cheap Fatar 37 TP/7BA. Would it be possible to exchange that with a weighted 37 Fatar TP/9S, like my Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard has?

Hi Monokit,
The TP9 is not a drop-in replacement in this synthesizer.
We do apologize for this issue would be happy to replace the keybed for you.

...I don't suppose there are any weighted keyboards that you know of that *would* fit the Sub 37, Moog Music?

Sorry, but there are none that are drop-in-replacements.

I am very disappointed about the keyboard of my Sub 37. Besides the problems i have with it, i dislike the keyboard action and the height of the black keys. The Fatar TP/9S of my Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard (699€) feels much better than from my Moog Sub 37 (1399€)! How can that be? I was hoping Moog would put the Voyager keyboard inside the Sub 37 Tribute. I would have been even willing to pay more...but nope...didnt happen.

I am going to return my Sub 37 to my dealer for a refund. Sorry Moog. These synths are made to get played...but that isnt possible with a crappy keyboard, that feels awkward, because the black keys are too high, and you have almost no control over the velocity, because the keys react either too fast or not fast enough. My Voyagers keyboard action was much much better. And i was so foolish and sold it in order to get the Sub 37...

it's true, for its price the s37's kb does seem rather crappy. mine isn't uneven or anything. but the keys are unweighted and feel rather cheap. i find it very hard to control the velocity when playing on this kb. also, looking underneath the keys, i found the same black smudge that others have posted about elswhere.

i'm not much of a keyboard virtuoso and will probably do more with the arpeggiator/sequencer than attempt any breakneck solos - so this isn't exactly a dealbreaker for me. but for a premium product like this, the kb quality seems inadequate. i can see how other, more kb-oriented users see this as a reason to return their s37 and maybe wait for a 'slim s37 rme' expander version to play from a proper kb.

I don't have a sub37 but wanted to mention that the keyboard on the Little Phatty isn't as nice as I would have liked either. It is definitely the weak link on the instrument. My Roland XP-30, Yamaha Motif 6, and Waldorf Blofeld are much better than the Moog and they were much cheaper instruments. I think this is an area Moog needs to work on - keyboard feel is very important. Add another $50.00 or whatever to the price, but do it up right boys.

I love your instruments Moog... but the LP's keys are not that great.

SELF-EDITED: (I apologize as my initial post was a bit harsh; I was in shock at some of the other comments!)

Interesting, as my Moog Sub 37 keyboard seems really nice. I've been playing synths since the late 1970s, and comparing it to a couple of my other keyboards I currently play the most, my Sub 37 feels at least as good, and in most cases better, than my DSI Mono Evolver Keyboard, and my Waldorf Microwave XTk and Micro Q, and my Clavia Nord Lead, and my Roland JP8000... So I guess once again, it's one of those subjective things; all just what you are use to I guess.

All true. That said though, many are saying that they have wonkeys. All my 30+ year old keyboards are straight as a ruler.

It is indeed a very subjective aspect.

I've played a LittlePhatty for... 5 years now (wow, epiphany : 5 years!!) and I find the action just below ok. My Clavia G2's is better, the Voyager's is really above, the MG1's is crappy... but hey, I try to do my best on it.

One question for the Sub37-ists who played a LittlePhatty too: I expected the aftertouch to make the Sub37 action softer, more Voyagerish, but it seems it is not. Am I right? How would you compare the LP and the Su37 actions?

S37 and LP feels almost identical. LP even a bit cheaper.

I've had my Sub 37 for just over a week now and I have to agree with some of the comments regarding the keyboard,
I don't feel it's "cheap" or "crappy" per say, but the action is WAY too stiff... it takes too much pressure to sound a note making the playing of faster runs difficult. Did someone mention replacing the keyboard springs?
