105M MuRF - First impressions

Post by MBlom » Wed Sep 10, 2014 12:52 pm

Just got a MuRF. And it's somewhat of a dissapointment so far. I can see (hear) the great rythmic effect it can do on a pad or for making a beat. But I aimed for using it to give my bass sound a different texture. Hoped that with the Envelope set to noon it would flow seamless between filter poles, and not "in bursts". Also, I'm not that pleased with the envelopes, want it snappy, but then it gets to short. Maybe it'll sound better with a snappy filter envelope from the Voyager.

Gonna solder a cable now to put in the Step jack from my Voyager (through MIDI-to-CV). Hopefully that'll make me get a better picture of what I can do with it.

The flowing seamlessly together happens at about the number 4 or number 6 on the envelope dial. Further to this, there is an envelope scale midi CC that can be used to stretch the envelopes, which is really cool once you stream midi CC data to it. You could send an LFO from a DAW that cycles from short bursts to long flows.

Like I said in another thread - it has a steep learning curve to take it to some really awesome places. Manual dive, get good at understanding how MIDI controls work, and just tweak. For now, familiarize yourself with all of the in between settings, and forget about the software!

Ok. I'll give it a try. Though I don't use a DAW or sequencer. I want to play this by hand.

Soldered the Step cable but unfortunately my Kento Pro Solo didn't send new gate triggers when holding down a key. Even though it's set to "new key" and "multi trig". That makes quite a difference to what I've expected getting out of it. It seems like this is a great effect for DAW/sequencer-making music or rythmic effect, but so far not for me, wanting a more "organic" feel and control, being played and controlled by hand.

I'll give it a few days, but I'm quite sceptical.

As you should be; don't let the honeymoon phase sway your decision to keep it. Make certain it does what you want easily.

Mine comes out to jam sporadically, as that is our goal - organic, on the fly. If its not working, I don't use it, or it ruins the vibe etc. That said, when the MuRF fits, it is awesome.

I'm not familiar with the Voyager: Can you assign CC's to the voyager controls? I'm using my iPhone and TouchOSC to change CC's as I need it, and that's only because I already had that stuff to do it. Having a reliable Gate trigger would be essential to get what you have described - or at least a midi controller that responds sends stop and start messages based on a key press & hold / release.

I guess that the Voyager can do quite a lot MIDI-wise. Didn't think about that it could be set to send start/stop signals.

Tried it again before bedtime and got a nice sound out of it. But then I realised it sounds close to what the 103 phaser does and switched to it. Sure enough, it was very close. Gonna try to find sounds that I can't do with anything else.

Worked a bit with it tonight. Used the drum machine to send midi clock and set it to 16ths. Did the trick. Used a loaded pattern which keeps the three low filter poles but alternates the upper ones. It's still not too far from the phaser, but it has a more ... metallic or aggressive feel to it that I like. Subtle, but that doesn't have to be a negative. Starting to like it more. Still not convinced to keep it though. It's far from cheap.

You can use pattern 1 either in Bass or Mids to stop the animation.

I do think the Voyager can be used as the Step trigger, the EW+ easily does it and its great. Maybe the S&H step can be used too?

You can also control the filters with MIDI notes to mute and trigger them, as well as using notes to step through the sequence and more...

Thanks! My main issue though, is the sound of it. I wish it had more "bite" to its effect, like the phaser. Would be very pleased if I could've tweaked some formants out of it. As I've managed yet, it's a little to subtle to be worth its price. Viewed from my way of using it, that is.

Hi MBlom,

The MuRF family is similar to vocoders in that you really need to feed it a full-frequency spectrum in order to hear all the different bandpass filters working.

My apologies if you're already way beyond this but, if there isn't very much sonic energy at one of the MuRF's frequency bands, you really won't hear much of a difference if that band is attenuating or not.

So... try preceding the MuRF with a distortion (or really bright oscillators) to give it a lot more to chew on.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But thanks for the advice, I might just have had my thoughts elsewhere

Anyway, I returned it and I'm glad I could do that. Didn't get my money back but instead the amount as credit when putchasing something else. It didn't take long before I started planning what. I'm such a sucker for new gear. Now suddenly a Minitaur is just what I have to have. Embarrasing!
