Voyager XL consistently slightly out of tune

Post by andre99 » Mon Jun 30, 2014 6:40 am

Hi, I have a three day old brand new Voyager XL that is slightly out of tune (about a semitone). I have tried everything to fix this but am stuck and was wondering if anyone can help -

- Have tried controlling with the keyboard and with MIDI
- nothing plugged into the patch section
- pitch bend not up obviously
- have checked tuning against multiple sources
- have checked transpose In/Out in the Master section and it is set to 0
- it is consistent on all presets
- I haven't edited any Master functions as it's only a few days old

Thanks

Hey! I had a similar problem, but it was my own fault. Hopefully your solution is the same as mine.

The fine tune knob?

First jam session I had with a friend, I was kind of freaking out because I couldn't get the XL in tune with the guitar. We spent quite a while going through the manual and trying to figure it out. Then I noticed the fine tune knob, turned it to 12:00 and it was in tune. All part of learning how to use the synth I guess, since I ran into this when it was still brand new also.

You probably tried that already, but hopefully not!

Gee thanks for that, I can't believe it was that obvious. I've only owned a RME for 3 years. Must have selective blindness.

I have to turn the fine tune to somewhere between the 6 and 7 to get it in tune. Not sure what that is all about.

Don't feel bad, I wasted a whole jam session dinking around with my new synthesizer which I obviously did not know how to play. I never got it in tune until afterwards. Not my finest musician moment.

I'm not sure if 12:00 is always supposed to be in tune, it might vary by preset. Which would explain why there is a fine tune knob.

Fine tune knob between 6 and 7 is perfectly normal. It is due to the way an analog synth is made. Ambiant temperature, electronic components tolerances, and everything that precedes that knob (pitch bend wheel, modulation sources, keyboard circuit, etc) can have an influence on the overall pitch of the whole instrument.

And yeah, don't feel bad. We've all had days (or nights) like that when the obvious seems so mysterious...

At least your beloved XL is working as it should. :D
