Do I want a Phatty if I own a Voyager already?

Post by dravis14 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 1:59 am

Seriously, considering how many presets are bass oriented, and considering all the possibilities
of the bass sounds that my Voyager is capable of producing, is there a viable reason that I should
pick up a Phatty unit if I see a good price? Am I missing something here?......thanx you guys

I don't think so. Phatty is a poor man's Voyager

It depends.

For one thing, the LP has overdrive ('OVERLOAD'), which means it gets sounds that the Voyager can't. The overdriven type of sound may appeal to you, and you can't duplicate it simply by sticking an overdrive pedal on the Voyager.

For another, if you play out, the smaller and lighter LP (~22 lbs) can be a very attractive alternative to lugging a larger and heavier Voyager around (~40 lbs), assuming you don't need three oscillators or a few more keys, of course.

A second hand LP at a good price might be worth considering...

That is a serious one. I take my Phatty out and it's already not the lighest amongst my boards. But a Voyager...

The sub phatty or 37 would complement the voyager much better. The problem is you might end up liking it more. They really came through with the tone on the sub.

You might find, dare I suggest, that the Little Phatty or whatever Phatty you are considering is everything you need. And if you can pick one up for $700, bonus. (1/4 the price of a Voyager).

On the other hand, the Voyager is the desert Island mono-synth.

I had both, now I just have the Voyager, but I miss the charm of the Phatty; not as capable but it has soul of its own, difficult to describe. For sure, those light wheels on the four pots are very very nice.

Just one man's opinion. There are many...

I found each of the Voyager, Little Phatty, and Sub Phatty have feels like a different 'gestalt', that influences my playing or sound design with each synth. Also, my intent to build a Poly Phatty influences the way I approach the Little/Slim Phatty's.

I like them all, and don't feel like I have 'redundant' functionality or sound capability.
