pitch shfter

Post by ghkgoto » Wed Apr 01, 2009 2:18 am

hi there !

i've got the frank zappa's album "waka jawaka" (1972) and in the liner notes he thanks bob moog for his pitch shifter !
i don't think we can talk about digital device in 1972 ?

so it will be great to have a moogerfooger pitch shifter !

The POG and the HOG are most certainly not analog. There is too much going on to be able to get an analog device to respond to the mathematical algorithms required to be able to play to a sync'd pitch in real time. That and they sound digital, really good, but still digital.
Vibration emanates from all things, even nothing. Using awareness to translate vibration into "music" is something that I am whole heartedly grateful for.

1957 - Max V. Mathews at Bell Labs - MUSIC - the first digital synthesizer. Technically, it was a computer program, though it set the stage for every digital synthesizer that proceeded it.
1972 - Triadex Muse - first of many horrible sounding digital synth/seq workstation thingies
1973 - Coupland Digital Music Synthesizer - First Digital (Triadex beat it?) Update via Peter Grenader:

1973 - NED - Synclavier - first digital synth

I think I hear the mothership coming.

This one claims to be analogue

POG very well might be digital. I agree that EH does not say.

You should also look at this one from Pigtronix:

Or for those who favor modulars this:

The POG, micropog, and HOG are digital- 100%, and if you heard one in person you would know instantly. I have the HOG and while I love the pedal, it's not fooling anyone into thinking it's analog!

Now while an analog pitch shifter/whammy isn't happening, I would LOVE to see a moogerfooger octaver!

I imagine it being in a murf enclosure with individual volume sliders for each octave-- -3, -2, -1, dry, +1, +2, or something similar (1/5's and 1/3s not possible, correct?). Then have -4,-5,-6 for oscillation, similar to that of the nocto loco (4ms.com).. etc

We can dream right!

the mothership is analog and can do pitchbends, and 5ths and 3rds with an analog octave pedal is possible i have one that does it. it was built by a friend of mine, ive mentoned before on here hes built a few other pedals for me too. but it does unison, 3rds, and 5ths. and can range from 0,1,2,3 octaves above or below. its a hard beast to control but once you do, WOW! run that before the foogers and you got some crazy guitar synth
My modular so far: Q104, Q106 x2, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, Mixer and Mankato playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M x2 ( STEREO!) Volca Beats and Bass, Arturia Beat step

This is a demo of the rare all analog A/DA Harmony Synthesizer. It also includes an analog delay.

Interesting. I find myself wondering if there is a way to create an a frequency following circut that would produce a CV. Morton Subotnick used one of these but perhaps this circult is uing Ring modulation? Not sure but intersting.

Thanks for the advice. I thought about this one. I have seen a lot of Pogs being used but no Hogs and I guess that is why. I would think they have similar circuts but I guess not.

Are you referring to Pitch to CV? There are a few out there, I've read that many can get pretty inaccurate in their tracking though.

I'd like to see an update to the MP201 that includes a quantizer setting that is scaled for the freq box frequency input, so that you can send scales to it.
