Wood damaged, which varnish?

Post by fietspomp » Sun Oct 27, 2013 8:08 am

My Voyager has been damage on the wood side panel. I want to abrade and polish it again. But what kind of varnish or lac would I need to use? I like tot try to avoid to abrade all of the wood of the entire panel, just want to repair the damaged part, but then I would need a varnish coming as close as possible to the original. Any ideas?

Could any of the Moog engineers help me with this?

Can you post a pic?

Hmm, just tried to upload a picture. Get the message "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached'. No idea how to delete previous uploads.
Will try again later.

Use an online free photo sharing site, like Photobucket, then link to it.

I see.

You should probably send that pic to Moog and get a recommendation. Howard's makes a finish restorer that might work if the abrasion is not too deep. Otherwise, I would tape off all the metal and plastic, sand with 200 then 400 grit sandpaper. Wipe well with 100% mineral spirits (not paint thinner or turpentine) and wipe on an oil finish like Tung Oil very light coat to start. You can put more coats on if needed to match. If you aren't experienced in finishing wood you might want to get someone who is to do this.

So the Voyagers are not treated with lac or varnish but with oil?

It looks and feels like an oil finish to me. I would recommend something other than Tung oil. In my experience, Tung oil takes a very long time to cure. Danish oil is what I prefer for oil finishes. Though either one will get you there.

Watco makes a great Danish oil finish, which would work fine. Sometimes Tung Oil is mixed with components to make it dry faster. Without those components, it takes a couple of days. Again, I recommend that you ask Moog what they use for the original finish. Post the info here, if you don't mind. Good luck.

For what it's worth, I think the scrape looks pretty cool. That's a synth that's been places and seen things.

I would say do not sand it while it is attached to the synth. Take it off lest sawdust gets in your works, then when it is dry put it back on. Just sayin'
