MIDI-noob. What's the basics with a Voyager?

Post by MBlom » Thu Oct 03, 2013 10:53 am

Tried to connect my MonoMachine to the Voyager the other day but the sequenced notes drowned in nonsense trigs. So annoying! I've got zero control and knowledge when it comes to Midi channels and such. All I know is to connect the Midi cord to the sequencers Out and to the Voyagers In. In the MonoMachines Midi settings it said "Midi base channel" and something like "Midi span" after that.

What do I need to know about Midi concerning a Voyager? Please enlighten me!

Realised today that those "nonsense trigs" might have been the Voyager transposing the midi tones two octaves down. When I set a sequence at around G4, the Voyager plays bass. Below that, it just growls quite unmusically (to my ears). So I made it work, though I wonder why it behaves like this. I'm really lost when it comes to midi channels.

I have the MIDI prgramming skills of a potato salad. Wish I could help. I never really got into using MIDI (I used to be one of those snooty "bla bla bla you should just be able to play it bla bla bla) performance dorks, and now that I'm running out of modulation ideas, looking into Liine Lemur, and getting ready to start playing out in 2014, it's kind of like "......uh oh."
So yea, if you figure things out here and there, let me know. :)

What is going on is that MonoMachine's sequencer is sending MIDI Note messages two octaves (-24) to the Voyager, or that the Voyager is set to transpose the notes two octaves down. however, MonoMachine could be sending only one octave below (-12) and the Voyager is set like this too.

You have to check how to change that parameter on both of them. I don't have access to neither, but I can help you, since I have been deep into MIDI since 1994

Thanks! I'll get back to you with info of what the midi settings on the MonoMachine says.

Let us know what happens! See? I was scratching my head for a bit after what was a pretty simple explanation. How do you like the Monomachine, by the way?

I love it! It's quite fast and intuitive to work with. Nice features and well thought through knobs and buttons. The sounds are digital, but in a beautiful shimmering way if you just tweak a while. It's definitely not a Moog, so better use its strengths instead trying to make it sound analog. And I love the sequencer! And having six synths in one is great.

Oh, and it's SWEDISH! :D

I checked the Voyagers settings and it doesn't transpose. Have to check the MonoMachine manual and settings.

The Voyager DOES transpose MIDI info. (Incoming and outgoing.Master function 4.1) It is in the menus. I have to bump it up 24 semitons with my MAQ 16/3 .
