Report on Sub Phatty Linux support

Post by mattismyname » Wed Oct 16, 2013 12:38 am

Just got my Sub Phatty and am loving it. I wasn't able to find any reports online of how well it interoperates with Linux PCs, so i thought I'd give my results here:

1. Midi works fine out of the box (thru Jack...didn't try anything else)
2. Had hoped to find firmware version reported via 'lsusb' but didn't see it there. Luckily I found info online the serial no. at which the factory moved to v2)
3. Patch editor runs under wine, but does not connect to device. I believe this is because Wine does not yet support USB. ( More details here: http://wiki.winehq.org/USB )
4. Because my firmware was already at v2, I didn't try sending the sysex data from Linux directly.
5. Tried running the patch editor in a Vbox Windows session. Required me to set up the USB passthrough for the SP in VM configuration. After doing that and restarting the patch editor everything worked as expected and I was able to load/store patches to the SP!

If I get time, I may try the Wine USB patches...would be cool to get the patch editor running natively in Linux.
