Share your synthesizer music!
Re: Share your synthesizer music!
Thanks, Stiiiiiive and Jay. I had a hard time completing that one because I decided I wanted to use very little or no external effects, which made my poor musicianship shine through like a diamond in the raw. I love the tones I was able to achieve by overloading the Voyager's filter though, and I just couldn't bear to cover that up with delay or reverb or what have you. I think I might try an entire batch of songs with as few effects as possible.

Re: Share your synthesizer music!
I love the tones that you get with the filter overdrive. However at 1:13 there are random voices that come it that don't seem to have any relevance to the music. I tend to turn off stuff like that immediately, though deciding to give it more of a listen, I still don't 'get it'. For me, the piece works right up until that point.
Don't mean to bash your efforts, just trying to understand your compositional process. It's really got some loveliness to it.

The voices you hear is a recording I did when I was sitting in a cafe watching some kids play a few years ago. There was a brother and a sister, the sister maybe 5 and her brother was probably 2. They were sitting in front of an aquarium. She was explaining to him what all the animals in the tank were called, and then she told him about the frog and how the frog needed to swim to the surface to breathe, because he was not a fish. The situation was one of those magical moments in life that I feel a lot of us miss because we don't often pay close attention to children. I felt a certain "musical" quality to the way this little girl felt compelled to teach her brother something, and I wanted to share what I saw. I don't expect everyone to understand, so I'm not offended, but the voices are not "random".

The voices reminded me of a song by Stevie Wonder, on the album "Songs In The Key Of Life", where we can hear a recording of his very young daughter (then) playing in the water (presumably in a bath tub) and having fun. Another magical moment for him. The song is called "Isn't She Lovely ?".

Here's a little test (more or less) that I did a month ago that folks seem to have liked:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fAkk-JzbfI
From the description:
The lead voice is a single MOTM-310 (saw out) going into an Oakley Croglin VCF (that is being modulated by a Modcan Control 66B) and then through a MOTM-485 VCF (that is being modulated by a MOTM-800 EG) and then off to a MOTM-190 VCA (being modulated by another MOTM-800 EG) And of course using a M-Audio midi keyboard through a MOTM-650 MIDI to CV converter.
The sequence is basically a Moon 569 sequencer controlling the pitch of four MOTM-300 VCOs. From each VCO I'm taking the saw and pulse outputs and running them into the Modcan Scanner, with the exception that 2 of the saws are run through the Happy Nerding Super Sawtor first. Also, each output of a MOTM-380 LFO is PWM each VCO. The left and right outputs of the Scanner each go to a different MOTM-800 EG + MOTM-190 VCA pair. Those two EGs are triggered by a different bank of the Moon 568 using and alternating setup (sort of 16th notes like LLRR LLRR LLRR etc) There is also a Modcan Digital Delay adding more complexity to the rhythm) The Moon 554 Clock Divider is slicing up the Modcan Clock 53B master and serving it up to the various clock sucking little devils.

John, not everyone who owns a modular knows how to make beautiful music with it, but you sure can !
Those chaser lights on the sequencers are hypnotizing...
Up close like that, it kinda looks like Erik Norlander's "wall of doom"...

Re: Share your synthesizer music!
Exactly: John, this is truely musical. Bravo!
Kenneth, thank you very much for sharing that story. You see, I don't produce a lot of material but there is often something in it that I took from "the real life". Not necesarily audio, but the title, the picture accompanying it, or whatever. It is, if not a way to share something through the music, a way to relate the piece to a memory. So I get, and I like when such stories are told

As always, lovely work, Kenneth. I can feel the passion that went into this.
Also, John, excellent modular jam indeed. well done, sir.
And of course, Rabalder, very interesting jams. I definitely enjoyed them.

@Vitja
Being first and foremost a drummer myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the song Ant Stream very very much ! Lovely combination of irregular time signature and syncopated synths ! Very nice progressive jazz/fusion.
Oh, and very nice mixing and sound. Love the compressed drums, and overwhelming Moog bass!
Might have to buy that album...
Kudos to Bojan Krhlanko for excellent drumming.
