Novation UltraNova any threat to Phatty?

Postby EMwhite » Mon Sep 20, 2010 6:17 pm

I used to think that the DSI stuff was the only threat to Phatty. The good hardware based Virtual Synths (Virus Snow, Waldorf etc) were certainly more $$

But now Novation has released the UltraNova and I question at what point, people who make music will not care about whether or not a particular kbd is pure Analog or not? They to make high impact sounds and serious sonic capabilities in addition to an arpeggiator.

Looks as if they've incorporated some of their touch control technology along with a VA engine (onboard effects, etc), a Vocoder into a tight package. I have a Novation SL MK2 kbd that has a Fatar keybed (as this one does) and it's very well made (hard plastics and absence of that 'made in China' feeling that I get from Akai controllers).

If you watch the video, you'll see that it's aimed at the DJ/dance/trance/rave crowd. To me, it seems to be the next iteration of the Korg Micro type devices except with a full size and high quality keyboard.

Is this a threat to the possible future Phatty that we've been waiting for?

I think UltraNova is like Korg R-3, that is not so cool - the sound is dull and plastic.
VA devices like Clavia Nord Lead or Access Virus are much better and they can be a rivals to analog synths like Moog, but cheap things like UltraNova or R3 will not compare.
And I think that all these embedded virtual emulated fx processors are evil :)
Best regards, Ruslan Tagirov.

Toyz: MBPro+Live 9.x+LogicProX, Moog: LP StageII/Sub37/Minitaur, Clavia Nord: Stage2 SW73/ModularG2Engine, Roland: MC909, Korg: MS-20, R-3, Otomachines Bisquit/DER OTO, etc.

Why does new products are a "threat" to existing ones? Does a Stradivari cares, if Yamaha brings out another "silent violin"?
The UltraNova as a polyphonic digital synth is a great addition for the Phatty and can cover all needs for a polyphonic synth. Good for FX and Pads. Oh i forgot and it has a Vocoder.
Alternatively...get a Korg uKorg, half the price and just as good.
