Rubber on Mod Wheel Peeling Off!

Post by Xenollop » Sun Nov 08, 2009 4:46 pm

Hey all,

What I thought was a speck of dust on my Tribute's modwheel was in fact the rubber coating peeling off! So of course not realizing this I pulled the "dust" off, which left the indentation of the wheel with bare grey plastic showing. It looks like peeling skin... I'm not a gigger and haven't actually used the LP in a while, so it can't be from heavy wear, so I'm lost as far as what caused this. Bottom line I guess is:
Has this happened to anyone else? I guess Moog would replace the wheel if I wanted it fixed eventually (at cost I'm sure) as it would probably hurt the resale value as it's a Tribute...bummer!

Same here.

My mod wheel also got some side play issue, so I guess I'll try to replace that some time in the future, but it's a bummer for sure.

I'm drawing a blank on what the LHC is. How did you have your keybed updated? Was this through Moog?

I didn't think you had a Large Hadron Collider

I think a Large Hadron Collider should be on a must-have for little phatty stage 3 or maybe they can add it via next OS update ;-)

I second that notion...along with anti-peel wheels.

I too would like a Large Hadron Collider for the Stage III...no problem yet with the wheels, though my LP is fairly new...two years old, anyway...good to know what to expect. Perhaps I'll order an extra LHC to keep around as a Christmas gift to myself. What I would really like, though, would be clear wheels like on the Voyager Select...no peeling to worry about. :)

Will this happen to a LP S2 or only on the tribute model? I bought this instrument with the idea that was built like a tank but when i turned the knobs and touched the rubber parts i thought that it will need extra care to survive..

I have had my stage II less than a year, and already the lhc has peeled, its barely noticeable, and has only occurred in the dip. i played a new one recently at a music shop, and it felt strange, possibly, due to the pristine rubber.

The "rubber" on the wheels and the side panels is a paint-like spray-on coating called softouch. It has the benefit of being relatively inexpensive, but offering the soft tactile feel of a rubber. It's a very durable material, but it will scratch, just like paint. It does much better with abrasion than it does with scratching. In short, treat it like paint and it will last a long time. And don't pick at it. :)
