Little Phatty Keytar

Post by batdown » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:53 pm

has anyone successfully installed strap buttons on their LP? I'm trying to see if someone else has done this before I go drilling holes. The LP is pretty heavy but wouldnt it be cool to take it off the stand and use it as a keytar and really shred for one song?

I wouldn't. The rubberized side panels aren't strong enough to hold the weight of the LP. You'll end up ripping the strap pegs right out. Unless you have a Tribute, don't do it! I thought about doing it as well, and ended up destroying the Stage I side panel during weight testing. The side panel gave out after 15 Lbs. shearing force.

I'm just happy to save a fellow Mooger from a huge headache, batdown. I am interested in doing this as well. But yes...from my test, I have come to the conclusion that wood side panels are a MUST for this modification.

I don't think it's a good idea.
First, as you said, batdown, it's heavy. I think too heavy to be hold as a guitar and be confortable enough even for a single song.
Second, I strongly doubt if the construction process allows to apply such a big forces on the phatty sides even with wood sides.
I opened up mine recently and didn't look very solid, IMHO.
Anyway, if I had to do it I would try to put the straps buttons at the bottom panel. At least there will not be apparent external damages.
Good luck and post pictures!

Maybe you could design some sort of frame to sit around and support the rear of the phatty, and attatch straps to that, so then you wouldn't even need to mess with the synth itself.

I can hold mine without a strap for five minutes before my arm falls asleep. And I am by no stretch of the imagination a body builder. A strap would be an awesome thing to have on the LP. 8)
