Now I know where stone age sequencing comes from! Sounds a lot like von Haulshoven's stuff. Very cool! I noticed a lot of negative comments on the videos...something about how he stole the idea for his music from someone else and claimed he invented it? Whatever. He's great!

I also like von Haulshoven. I didn't mean that post to be an insult to either artist, they have very similar styles is all. :)

You must be in the wrong part of Montreal! ;)

He's hardly a household name anywhere, but most people who listen to electronic music have, I imagine, heard of him. Even in Montreal.
i'm from Montreal and i know of him. this thread is timely for me since i bought my first JMJ album last week :)

John Michel Jarre is an over rated composer of ponderous, mediocre nonsense who wouldn't know a good piece of music if it came up and bit his behind. JMJ lacks taste, credibility and any sense of edginess. He produces music for people who don't really like music. Just my subjective opinion, but there are far better people to admire out there.

As someone just discovering the sounds of JMJ, I appreciate your opinion. I did like the bits of the Egypt concert he did in 1999-2000. He does some great visual effects as well. Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious watching footage of his live shows that it's all pre-recorded, and he just mimes playing his synths. To me, I couldn't buy an album. A DVD, sure. But without the visuals, a lot would be lost. My opinion.

I would have to agree somewhat with Extra. Jarre's music seems thin, trite, and poppy to my ears. However, anybody that performs electronic music and attains a following gets a thumbs up in my book. The more the public accepts electronic music the better it is for all synth musicians.

Excellent point! For a minute there, I forgot electronic music wasn't well-received by the general public.

That, of course, is the point. He's a fine composer of well-crafted popular electronica verging on new age. I'd put him in the same category as Isao Tomita and Vangelis. Not terribly experimental, and not always, or even usually to my taste, but he does create nice, hummable, textured tunes that are useful in movie soundtracks.

Pop has its place. If you think of Jarre as the Harry Nilsson of electronic music, you're there...

To Extraborg: He´s not called John, but Jean, he´s French. BTW pardon my French, im from Europe. Always wanted to say that. Do French people say pardon my English when they curse? Just wondering...

I wouldn´t say that JMJ sounds like Von Haulshoven, it´s definitely the other way around. Von Haulshoven are very, very inspired by JMJ.

JMJ was one of the first persons to create musical spaces entirely with synths, and he was one of the people who invented it!

He was also the first one to record music in space! He did this in the 80´s. This reminds me of Von Haulshoven´s cover btw.

But if we have to go french, I like Air and Daft Punk much, much better. Especially Air, Moon Safari is a brilliant album.
