The volume level of Triangle waveform

Post by Celluloide » Fri Dec 19, 2008 1:02 am

I'm just curious if the volume level of Triangle waveform is usually lower than other waveforms like Sawtooth ot Square.

When I turn the knob all the way left(CCW)with Wave button selected, then does it means pure Triangle waveform selected? In that case, I feel as if the overall volume level is decreased. Therefore I can here only smaller sound comparing to the case with other waveforms. Especially in low keys, it is notable.
Is it normal?

Yes, the triangle is usually lower, although it is due to the waveform having less harmonics and not amplitude per say. The more harmonics (eg. square/saw/ramp) the easier it is to hear the waveshape "cutting" through the mix.

Triangle is almost a sine which is why it is often a common LFO shape for traditional up-down modulation. Sine shaping takes more circuitry and it is difficult for the ear to perceive much difference between tri and sine, at least when modulation is concerned. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your kind explanation, djthomaswhite :)
It helped me a lot to understand that clearly.
Thanks.
