The good ole horn lead (and how I suck at programing it)

Post by Khoral » Sat Feb 02, 2008 5:13 am

I know it's a total newb question, eheh, but I'd like to program the classic Minimoog horn lead sound, as played for example by Rick Wright on Shine on
I'm getting close but there's still something wrong about, uh, something... can't put my finger on it
I'm guessing I'm just still having trouble mastering the subtleties of LP programming
Any tip?

Ah, that lead on shine is great. I tried to figure it out before, but never quite got it. I just have a prodigy though, which is a little more limited.
What does this button do?

LP Stage II, Dead Prodigy, Juno 60, MF-101 & 102, CP-251, guitars, bass, banjo, and the almighty glockenspiel/melodica combo

Try getting as close as you can, with 1 sawtooth wave, and 1 triangle wave, slightly de-tuned. Then set up the modulation with filter env to wave shape, set to full amount, with the mod wheel all the way up. It's as close as I can get.

Good song, great sound.

I can't quite nail it, but I can offer some tips:

1. Long decay on filter and volume envelopes; play around between 2:00 and 4:00 to get a bit of a tail to recreate the "tail" on Shine On

2. Moderate attack time on filter, short on volume.

3. Oscillator wave knob set about midway between Saw and Triangle for both oscillators.

4. Play around with the Cutoff and EGR Amount knobs. I found this to be the real tough part, because it's difficult to strike a balance. You don't want 100% EGR, but then too little and there isn't enough of that "wah" in the attack of the note.

Bottom line(s) in my experience: waveshape is important, filter cutoff and envelopes are VERY important. It's a tough one to get just right, because it is so distinctive.

So, I had pretty much forgotten about it and then I lost my patch experiments, but I got back on it today

Here's a preview sketch (using GMedia VSM) http://khoralnet2.free.fr/Shine-On.mp3

And the sysex file if anybody more skilled than I am in programming wants to tweak it (because there's a lot of room for improvement there!)

Hi Khoral I just sent the patch to your e-mail, Please post it here for the other guys at the forum to enjoy.

As for the patch, try to use it with the Mod wheel all the way up for some minor PWM and vibrato effects.

Hey Khoral, Glad you liked it.

I find it resembles the original sound more closely when a little delay is added, I use the MF104 and it sounds really close to the original.[/i]

I'm going to allow this off-topicness

I wonder if there's a Floyd patch on the Voyager
I'm thinking of getting the Arturia Minimoog demo and try to emulate the sound and see how it would transpose on the LP

Since I started working on the Shine on patch, I've been listening to the whole album and now I want to recreate the lead sound used in "Welcome the Machine", this sound is really amazing.

I will give it a go and let you guys know.

Oh yeah
It's really an album that opened my mind when I was a teen
Every lead synth is memorable, and then there are the awesome eerie strings and the fx
