Slim Phatty - usb midi problem - note on all the time

Post by spcd » Fri Aug 22, 2014 3:44 am

Hi,

I've purchased a Slim Phatty and been enjoying pretty much
but there is one big problem:

If I play with it for sometime, it will start to play one note for ever.
No way to stop but to power down and start again.
It is especially true with the Editor where it happens very quickly.

Has anybody experienced this before?
Is there a fix?
Did I get a damage unit??

Thank you!

Hi there,

Andy Hughes from the Moog Tech Lab here. A stuck note is commonly caused by an instrument not receiving a MIDI NOTE OFF command from a sequencer or DAW. There is a panic function you can use to stop a stuck note, simply press both of the KB OCTAVE buttons simultaneously and hold them down for a second. This will clear the note stack.

If you are not using MIDI, and you are getting stuck notes, inspect your keyboard and see if any of the keys are mechanically binding or whatnot.

Also, make sure your instrument is running the most up to date firmware(available on our website under the Sub Phatty downloads page.)

Please feel free to contact me at 1-(828)-254-0090 xt 221 or by email: [email protected]

Thanks,
Andy Hughes

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your reply.

Alas, the KB Octave didn't do the trick.
There's also a patch that seems to make my Slim Phatty goes crazy(a patch from an other Little Phatty edition via the Editor).

I am using an irig keys via USB Midi.
It works with no problem with the iPad or any other softs on my iMac.
This is the first time I encounter such a problem.

At startup, the Slim Phatty displays Rev. 3.12 680 and boot 1.1.
Is it the latest version? (it does look like so though).

For now, it is absolutely of no use with my actual setup(well,I can enjoy the sounds for up to 5minutes before it gets stuck).

I thought perhaps the irig keys is the problem so I wanted to try via Logic Pro X with the Editor to see if also happens with Midi data from the DAW.
Alas, here again, impossible to get sound from it(I do think it's because I do not understand how to set it up though).

The manual only explains how to set it up on Logic Pro 9.
I've done my best to replicate that on Logic Pro X.

Hardware Setup
a) Slim Phatty to iMac via USB cable
b) Slim Phatty Out to audio interface audio input 1

Software Setup
1. Create a Midi Software track
2. Set up the Little Phatty Editor as the VI plugin on the track created in step 1.
3. Open the Little Phatty Editor and set up the Midi Connection.
Here I am lost. I can't select the host section and I've set in/out to Slim Phatty.
Midi Channels are set to 1 on both the Editor and the DAW track.
4. created a Midi section with a note
If I play I get the host in led flashes but only the editor out let flashes.
My audio interfaces do not pick up any sound
5. Created an audio track with the audio input 1 as the source.

With the above setup, no sound goes from my Slim Phatty to my audio interface.
But if I create an External Midi track, I do get sounds from Slim Phatty.

So it's yet an other problem with the first one and I can't test what is causing the stuck note.
the keyboard? the usb cable? Slim Phatty units itself?

I'm a newbie to the analog synth world so bare with me^^;

As Andy said, it's a note-off issue. Some of my MIDI controllers are more of a problem with the Slim than others, however, the Slim is the only device in my collection that has this problem. I ended up creating a panic button for my MIDI chain.

This is far to be an answer.

I'll post again the important bits:

- the KB Octave didn't do the trick.
- There's also a patch that seems to make my Slim Phatty goes crazy(a patch from an other Little Phatty edition via the Editor).
- The problem happens way much more when using the Little Phatty VST Editor(seems the soft is buggy?)
- Rev. 3.12 680 boot 1.1.

I bought the slim phatty over the sub phatty because of it form factor:
- not too heavy
- can be used with my own keyboard controller
- can bring it to rehearsal and lives easily.

But as for now, with this stuck note problem, I can certainly not use it for live/rehearsals.
I can not really use it at home either.
so, "it's a note off problem", is really not the answer I would except.
The formulation should be "our soft/hard has a problem handling Midi messages properly and we're working to fix that".

Because I've looked up the internet and many people seems to suffer from the very same problem.

At this price range, I would except it to work(hard+soft= $1100 where i leave).

I would also like to have an explanation regarding the Logic Pro X setup:
-------
The manual only explains how to set it up on Logic Pro 9.

Andrew has disappeared it seems.
I think it's a rather huge problem and silence is not any better.

Nobody knows how to setup the VST Little Editor with Logic Pro X?

Hi spcd,

Andy is out sick right now; everyone at Moog is wishing him a speedy recovery. I will try to help you from here.

First a small correction, with my apologies: the KB OCTAVE buttons do not perform an "all notes off" on the Slim Phatty. This was a miscommunication between Andy and myself, actually; that panel shortcut exists on the Sub Phatty and Sub 37 but not the Slim. On the Slim Phatty, there's an "all notes off" function on the MASTER menu, MIDI SETUP page. It's the first item. While on this menu page, press ENTER to kill stuck notes.

Regarding the VST-AU Little Phatty Editor, I unfortunately have only Logic 9 and not Logic X... I will try to upgrade to Logic X but it might take a few days.

In Logic 9, I set up as you describe and it automagically works. I play MIDI on my controller keyboard, and this MIDI goes throught the editor and to the Slim Phatty, which makes a sound.

In the Editor, the Host IN LED flashes and the editor OUT LED flashes... which is the same as you describe... and this is correct! From the perspective of the plugin, it's getting MIDI IN from the host, and it's sending MIDI OUT (from the editor) to the synth. Editor OUT means MIDI coming out of the Editor and going into the Slim Phatty (assuming Slim Phatty is selected as Editor MIDI Out device, which you say it is). On the Slim Phatty, do you see the little triangle icon indicating MIDI activity appear on the LCD screen? (should see this on the lower left of the LCD when in PRESET mode, if the Slim is getting MIDI in).

It seems your setup is showing the correct signs, and should work... I am curious to know if the Slim Phatty is showing MIDI activity. Please let me know, I'll try to help more.

cheers,

Amos

Hi Amos,

Thank you for your reply.

So the midi Note OFF via the master button does work.
It happens most of the time the first time I plug the Slim Phatty
It seems to happen less often once I do a Note OFF command...

As for Logic Pro X, I've done everything as the last time but it worked with no problem this time.
I have no idea what's the difference though...
Switching preset does not seem to make it go crazy either...
humm... As I didn't power it down every 5min or so when a stuck was note perhaps the SP got time to stabilize?

Anyway, it seems it's stable enough today!
Some more days with it will tell if stays this way.

So far I love the sound!
Only the percussion presets are quite bad(kicks are ok but there s no usable hihat/snare/claps)
Even though I couldn't install the percussion sysex presets via the VST editor so this might change my opinion of it!
Would love a fbx version of it if possible!!

Hi Andy,

I hope you are well.

My Slim Phatty is not receiving Midi or CV/Gate. I tried Master Reboot + Factory Reset multiple times. I tried different keyboards and they all work with my other equipment.

Is there a way to check if the Slim Phatty is receiving Midi? To understand if this is a MIDI issue or more of an output issue.

The output On / OFF is turned ON.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,
