Amplification ?

Post by ZenHead » Fri Jul 08, 2011 6:49 am

I was wondering what type of amplification other LP users might be using. I have a Marshall JCM2000 TSL60.
I put off plugging my LP in the amp but I gave in a couple of days ago. Wow! I played through a clean channel. What I got was rich tones; far richer that when I use my Beats head phones.
I stopped playing through my Marshall because it's an expesive amp and I didn't want to ruin it. Maybe I should consider using a good compressor.

Anyway. I'd like to know what others are playing through.

Currently I am playing through my only amp, a Hiwatt Maxwatt G20r. Sounds quite good though, but I will soon upgrade to a DNS bass-amplifier modded to be a guitar/organ/synth amp.
My Gear:
Nord Electro 2
Little Phatty Tribute Edition
Korg Monotron
Epiphone G400
Moogerfooger 12 Stage Phaser
EHX Memorytoy analog delay
Boss SD-1 Overdrive

I am currently using a Roland kc-300. Not too bad but missing some low end response. I put a lot through it at once and it keeps the mix pretty clear, but I know it could still be a lot better. I've been looking for a powered PA and a sub for a while now. It's expensive and I keep getting tempted by new sounds sources and effects. Only 2 things on my buy list other than a PA, the moog mp-201 and FMR RNC (really nice compressor). I also need some repairs/mods done. Still searching for someone competent and local.

I have been using my bass rigs, a Mesa Bass Buster 210/15 200 watter, and a Mesa Walkabout through various 12 loaded bass cabs, and also a Roland KC350 which sounds nowhere near as good as the bass amps.

I use an Acoustic Image Coda R, which is an earlier version of this amp, for just about everything. It has the advantage of covering the full audio range loudly enough to play alongside a drummer, sounds really good, and weighs only about 20 pounds.

I imagine you can find amplifiers with less coloration, but so far I haven't seen anything that sounds nearly as good, especially when lots of bass is involved, that weighs anywhere near this little.
