SP Precision Mode Wave Values = Minimoog D's Original Waves?

Hello Moog Music!

I used to have a minimoog D... and loved the sound of the
"exact"... switchable minimoog Waveforms! :)

I recently purchased a Slim Phatty... and while it is very cool
to be able to get Waves "in-between" the Mini's original set waveforms:

- Could Moog Music tell me/us all... what the exact...
"PRECISION MODE" OSC1 & 2 Wave "values" are...
for each of the corresponding minimoog preset Waves?

i.e... The mini's "Wide" Square Wave seems to sound approximately
around 2860 in the Precision Mode reading!?

However... knowing the "exact" Precision Mode Wave values...
relating to the minimoog D's "preset" Wave values...
would be awesome... in creating exact... same sounding minimoog patches
on the SP & LP! :)

I would think that putting both an old mini and the SP together on a scope to
compare Waves... would be a good way to dial in the exact Precision Mode
Value for each Wave!?

I know there are values for tri, sharktooth, saw, square, ect. somewhere on this forum. I am not sure if they were dialed in to get as close to the shapes the mini-D produced or not. It was mentioned in that thread that if you really want to know your phatty's precision values for specific shaped waves you should scope your instrument. It was said that, there would be some drift in precision values from machine to machine.

You might also be able to find mini-D raw osc samples and try to dial it in as close as possible by ear.

Edit: It was greg who uploaded the OSC values. They were for the 6 mini-D osc shapes. It is available at the knobtweak yahoo group under files/ little phatty/ Little Phatty MIDI CC Info.pdf

The values are in midi CC values not precision mode.

I will guess two things:

1) from one Mini D to another, those "exact" waveforms may vary by as much as 5% from unit to unit.
2) from one Phatty to another, the "exact" Precision values to get matching waveforms may vary by a similar amount.

So, your ears are probably the best tools for this job. Not that some specific numbers mightn't cut down the time to get an exact match, by a bit.

Square wave in particular should be the easiest. Adjust the value of the waveform parameter until you hear the most hollow sound with the least harmonic content... that'll be the closest to a pure square. On either side of the ideal value, you'll hear more high harmonics creeping in (the even-numbered harmonics, to be precise).

But MIDI value are 0-127, while analog Moog engine works on 0-4095 :D
If someone could help, I also will thank him!! :)
However, it isn't difficult by ear... the square wave is the most recognizable, the sawtooth is between the two leds under the symbol, I think :wink:

btw: Nicola... I wasn't able to get your suggested
"free oscilloscope plugin" for mac to work? No install info?

So for now... with no access to a real Minimoog D... here's what I did:

I have a demo copy of "minimonsta"... so I opened that up...
and just used Osc 1 by itself... and opened the filter right up...
so as to compare it's Waveforms... to the SP Waveforms...
while in Calibration mode.

Here's what sounded quite close to me... while doing A-B comparisons:

Wave/Precision Mode Value:
Triangle: 0
Sharktooth: 260
Reverse Sawtooth (Osc 3): 1260
Sawtooth: 1360
Square: 2860
Pulse: 3500
Narrow Pulse: 3872

These seem to be good starting points anyways!

What Mac do you use? it should be intel-based a ques.
Also, it is not a standalone program, it is a plugin, you need to have a host program, any kind of DAW will do, Cubase, Logic, Live ..

I'm using it in Cockos Reaper as AU on Macmini, snowleo.

There is no instal,

just download, unrar, and copy the component file in your component folder and run it from your DAW. There is a manual inside also.

Hey Nikola...

Thanks. I'm on an Early 2008 Intel Mac Pro... with OS X 10.6.7
My DAW is: Pro Tools 9.02

I put the "s(M)exoscope.component" file in my: Main HD > Library > Audio > Plug-Ins > Components
folder as you suggested... but it doesn't show up as a selectable Plug-In... when Pro Tools is open?

I think it's because all the Plug-Ins in the Pro Tools Plug-Ins folder are .dpm files!?

Anyways... no worries. As mentioned above... for now... I have determined some comparitive
Minimoog waveform "Precision Mode" values... by A-B-ing my SP to the "minimonsta" moog waveforms!

So while not 100% exact... I think the values I came up with are very close... to the Classic... Minimoog D! :)
