Which amplifier?

Post by giguenot » Mon Aug 16, 2010 5:46 pm

Which amplifier I should buy for Etherewave Theremin Plus? I will not play only at home, but
also in a band. I guess. I mean I'm not ready to buy now one amp and after a few months or
half a year another.I don't have that amount of money.

I was looking for something like that

I also recently bought an Etherwave Theremin Plus.
I got this with it http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tamp_pa4080kb.htm.
Very happy with it, nice range. Playing it at home as well as in a band.
I'm a keyboard player so that's why I looked at keyboard amps first of course.
Also got 2 Moogerfoogers with it.
Cheaper too.

Cheers,
Tidda

A keyboard amp is always the best solution for Moog theremins. Their output level risks to overdrive the input of a guitar amplifier which can give a muddy and distorted sound.

I agree, a keyboard amp certainly would be the best approach in order to keep the sound characteristics of the Theremin without colouring due to a certain non lienarity which is ofter welcome with guitars. For example Steve Howe mentioned on his Travelling CD to use his Gibson together with a Tech 21 Trademark 60 which offers a "clean" channel with Fender appeal and additional "lead" channel for "emulating" Marshall, Mesa Boogie or Vox sounds. Again good for a guitar but not HiFi and will certainly influence the origin Theremin sound.
I use an Ashdown Acoustic Radiator 1 which gives a good linear amplification curve over a wide spectral range and has 100Watts RMS output which is o.k. for our rehearsal room to compete with the drums and also for live gigs (further PA aid may be necessary). And it's a low noise civilized amp suitable also for E-Musik (by the way the distinction between E-Musik for "serious music" and U-Musik for "popular music" is terrible and only valid in Germany I think - because the germans always needs to categorize everything).
But I also use a HiFi amplifier system at home and a mixer in front. Herewith I go directly with the Theremin audio output into the mixer. Particular for recordings I'm quite convinced about this method which obviously has no influence to the sound by an amp character or a speaker behaviour.

...in case i am not too late: http://www.thomann.de/gb/peavey_kb_4.htm is the one i am using with my EPro...all theremin-players i had try it - eg. in Lippstadt 2008 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFlBxrzOjDU ) as well as the people listening to it were pretty enthusiastic about it...

...at the moment Thomann also has a B-stock of the KB-4 available...
