cp251 & vx351/2 = ????

Post by slabwax » Wed Aug 20, 2008 7:10 pm

So after a year or so of saving and trying to sort out what is the best gear for me I should be ready to pull the trigger on my first Moog gear.

The plan is to buy a MF101, 102 & a CP 251 next week. I'll most likely pick up a LP and possibly a 104 with in the month. So I'm excited. Now for the dumb questions. Will the VX 351 or 352 work or do any thing for this set up or are they strictly for the Voyager synth?

Also how many patch cables should I get to start off with for all the MF's ( 3 + the cp)

Thanks for the advice. I'm sure I'll have more questions as the gear comes in.

Thanks Dean

slabwax, the VX 351 and 352 are ONLY for the Voyager. That's IT. as far as your choice of gear, yes. The LP is a must have. I run a CP251 through the pitch CV of the LP, and the MF-102 Audio out to MF-103 Audio in, and run audio out to the LP's Audio in. I use a minimum of 10 patch cables for this setup...one can never have enough patch cables. I also built a CV controller box that uses 8 TRS patch cables for controlling 8 CV parameters on all the 'foogers. I saved some money by making my own patch cables, but I purchased the TRS ones because it was cheaper. TRS plugs are expensive!

Now wait a minnut....you're running the LP audio out into 'foogers, then the audio out of the 'foogers into the LP audio in? How are you getting sound out of that thing?

No...MF 103's audio OUT to LP's audio IN. MF 102 audio OUT to MF 103's audio IN. :) Audio out from the LP goes to Channel 2 of the Peavey KB/A 60.

I'm still confused...help me out, for I'm an idiot.

The ring mod out goes into the phaser in, the phaser out goes into the LP in. If there's no signal going into the ring mod, how is sound generated?

The ring mod has its own oscillators...a carrier, and an LFO. These can be used to create a bell-like tone that repeats, or a few other limited sounds. When put through the phaser, which can create sweeps by itself if the rate and frequency are set low enough, you get a whole different animal. Just buy a couple foogers and experiment! You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. BTW, for anyone who doesn't know...the MF's are simply synth modules put into a stomp box.

So The pedals will be here soon. The cp-251 is already here and the 101,102 & 104 should be here Wednesday. So I'm off to buy some patch cables. Any suggestions?

Also I have the bug real bad now. I'm looking for a reverb unit to match. I just found the electro-harmonix Holier Grail. Does anyone have any experience with it, or any other recommendations? I'd like a unit that is more table top then rackmount. The E-H is the most I'd want to spend looks like they can be had for around $150.

Thanks again
Dean

P.S the Little Phatty gets orderd in two weeks :D

Sounds like a nice setup!

You should get some expression pedals most definately.
(NovaMusik generally sells the Foogers with pedals/DVD)
You may want to get your stuff racked up too. Not everyone does but I sure love having mine racked up. THe tabletop gets clulttered easily and For me its more ogainized. No assembly/dissassembly.

I have the EH Bass Balls and it works geat with Moog stuff. I beliefe that we ran through a Holy Grail or Electric Misstress or something like that. EH and Moog compliment eachother well. Just EH has no Control Inputs.

For Patch cables that aren't audio...Id get the cheapest ones you can find and use the better ones for Audio. OSP has some good cheap cables.

I think I hear the mothership coming.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be getting 4 ep-2 might be over the top but what the hell.

Should I get TRS cables. I think I read in the Cp-251 manual that using non TRS cables will disable the hot jacks for the ep-2. Did I misread?
Would not be the first time

I believe the EP-2 comes with it's own TRS cable...in fact am almost 100% certain of it. I would recommend Hosa TS cables from Sam Ash Music(www.samash.com) for the CP-251 as well as to connect the 'Foogers. Get a few 6" cables, a bunch of 12" cables, and depending on how far apart your stuff is, a couple 18" cables. Good choices, BTW! Also, if you want to be safe, get an 8 pack of 3 foot Hosa TRS cables for around $30, also from Sam Ash. I like Hosa because they are affordable and dependable. And I think you may want a couple more EP-2's...at least I would. My box of 8 pots is fully utilized, and there's still parameters that aren't being tweaked! I'm a control freak, I guess :D

No! That would just be a waste of money! If you want to be absolutely prepared, just get an 8 pack of Hosa 3 foot TRS cables. The rest should be basic TS cables.

To be really safe you would need a few 6'foot cables. I would NOT recommend Hosa because they are junk. You need at least 5 EP-2's. 1 for each foot, 1 for each hand, and one for your pecker.
