Recommendation for Bass Guitar
Recommendation for Bass Guitar
Hi all, I am looking at buying a second MF pedal (I already have the Bass Murf), and I was looking at the 101 Filter or the 102 Ring Mod. Which do you think would give me more usefulness, especially in making my bass sound more like a mono synth bass?
My current signal path is as follows: Bass into Akai Unibass into EH Big Muff into DOD FX 25 Envelope pedal into Bass Murf into Aphex Bass Exciter into Boss Bass Chorus pedal into amp.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give to me.

I have to say that the mf101 is probably the coolest pedal for bass out there. It is one of the only pedals that really sounds "transparent" to me where you can still here what your bass sounds like. Definitely get the 101. I use mine for an autowah or a rocker wah-type effect with the expression pedal. Also the drive is really cool and useful if you crank it!

I got the regular murf right before they came out with the Bass Murf...and I'm a bass player so I was quite miffed...
I use the MF102 with bass and it's great because you can get those awesome Squarepusher tones out of it. Plus, if you're playing chords that are related (different octaves of D etc or complementary notes) you can tune the frequency of the Ring Mod to add even more harmony.
It's definitely awesome...but I have yet to try the Low Pass filter...
Good Luck!

Bass guitar through distortion, fuzz, or overdrive, then into the MF101 would create excellent synthesizer bass. The MF102 would not be very useful for a synthesizer bass sound, you would still need the envelope filter after it. The MXR "Blue Box" or the soon to be released FreqBox would also work well before the 101 in the signal path.

both would be really cool. Ive used a 102 going into a 101 on my bass for quite some time...great for bootsy style sounds. Having said that I think the more vaulable of the two pedals for bass would be the 101. It really works well on bass guitar. If you can only buy one I reccommend the 101 but if can afford both ten I highly highly reccommend that you get both.
Thank You
A big thank you to all who left feedback and took the poll on this topic. I received my 101 today! It sounds great with my bass! I found that it was even better when I turned the resonance up to where the filter oscillated! I was able to adjust the pitch with the Cutoff Frequency knob, and then I used the Bass Murf as a "sequencer" to play the filter. It sounded especially killer when the "Drive" knob was turned up full blast on the MURF! Wow, I definitely have the beginnings of my own little analog synth, and I haven't even had time to plug in any expression pedals yet!!
I am so impressed! I definitely need to get that MF-102 soon!

Last night I was fooling around with a "poor man's" Bass Murf: a Technosaurus Cyclodon sequencer driving the cutoff frequency of my MF-101. Sounded pretty cool with my bass guitar, but I wondered what I was missing not having the real deal. Now I'm working on a way to recreate the Jomox M-Resonator filters...

I didn't try to use the MURF to drive the 101's cutoff frequency, maybe I will have to try that. I manually adjusted the cutoff frequency on the 101, but the filters on the MURF functioned in a way to change the frequency (pitch) of the oscillating filter. The MURF also has envelope control as well, so it acts as a pseudo-sequencer.
RE: M-resonator. I wish I had a schematic for it. I'm just trying to recreate the signal flow from the diagram on the FX box. Low-rent, to be sure. I'm still tweaking the patching on the modular (Doepfer, Analogue Solutions, Wiard modules + a Voyager, MS-20, and MF-101) to get close. I wish I had the $300 lying around to just buy one, but this looks to be a fun project no matter what!
