107 as sub-osc to Voyager. How to patch? What gear?

Post by MBlom » Mon Sep 29, 2014 4:54 pm

I've been experimenting with having a parallel synth to the Voyager with no resonance to keep a solid bass and be more free to tweak character out of the Voyager. This is mainly for bass patches, since that is what I almost exclusively do. (You can see my posts about that in the Voyager and Minitaur threads) But before I spend my dough on a Minitaur, which I'm very close of, I wanted to do some thinking. So here's another idea.

How about having my Freqbox do the job? You can see in my signature what gear I've got. What would I need to fix that? I have a midi-to-cv box, maybe a VX-351 would be more straightforward for that though, and give lots of modulating possibilities. And I still need some kind of VCA. Would be fun somehow to solve this with the foogers. Especially since I rarely use the Freqbox.

Hi,

I'm no expert with my Voyager and Moogers (though I am trying!) but I've achieved what you want to do with pretty much the same gear. I used to use my Kenton Pro Solo II Midi to CV converter to drive the pitch of the mf107 but I recently got a VX351, which is great.

Once you connect the pitch CV to the Freq CV in of the 107 you will need to adjust the freq and env knobs to get the mf107 in tune (you'll prob have a few octaves to choose the same pitch - so I'm guessing you'll want the lowest in-tune pitch, so turn the freq knob anti-clockwise naturally!). Then simply, play away. There is definitely a limited range where it will track well, but I found it more than enough.

There are simply not enough hours in the day to experiment with moogy things.

Great. Thanks!
Though I still need something to do the VCA-work. I don't want it to go back into the Voyager through ext in since that will reduce the bass when resonance is high. I want it parallel.

I understand that.

Sometimes I run the audio out of my mf107 into my Koma FT201 filter, which has a 10 step sequencer, which can control cutoff, which can work in some instances. I've never used the mf101, but I wonder if the envelope there might help you out somehow?

Failing that - you could do anything with it once it gets into your DAW!

Ok. I'll think about it.

I don't use a computer. I play it live in a band.

if you want the Voyager to control the envelopes, split the Voyager audio output and send to both your mixer and the MF-107 audio input. Set the 107 mix to full effect so only the internal osc is heard. Send the CV signal to the 107 freq input to control the osc frequency. The internal 107 VCA will then be driven by the Voyager envelope while passing only the 107 osc signal to the 107 audio output.

I put it in the Mixer Out/Filter In with an insert cable. You can use the Sync button on the FreqBox so it keeps in tune through all the keyboard.

The VCA can be done with Koma's RH301, that is if you want a separate VCA for the 107. All of the other OSCs use the main envelopes...
