Freqbox vs modular VCO?

Post by ColorForm2113 » Tue Dec 25, 2012 4:42 pm

I was thinking the other day, would you get the same effect of using the freqbox in sync mode as you would by plugging your guitar into the hardsync input on a dot com vco? I know you would have to put the instrument interface or something before it to boost the signal and an envelope to complete the fun sweeping effects, but just using the standard hard sync function would it work/sound the same?

Thanks and merry christmas!

Merry Christmas! I'm not sure if that would work in the same manner. I can tell you it won't sound exactly the same because the MF-107 has a very unstable oscillator, similar to the Moog 901. Not sure if it would be cheaper to go the .com route either. You need a case, power supply, Q102 or Q137, plus the oscillator, envelope, and instrument interface.

Yeah I know it won't sound exactly the same and definitely would not be cheaper. I was just curious if it was possible to recreate

No, it won't work. It's not a matter of amplification (via Instrument interface) though that would be required also, but rather, the requirement of a very specifically shaped incoming clean waveform that can be discernible as a series of hard shaped leading edges as opposed to something which is more sine-waveish and morphing over time or complex.

Something which is square or ramp will work just fine (sharp rise, and decaying ramp vs. rising ramp w/drop off that is).

Most oscillator cores can output each of the waveforms simultaneously from different parts of the circuit and it's just the selection and panel real estate that is up to the designer.

Much of the circuitry inside of the Freqbox matches (or tries to) the frequency regardless of the waveform or complexity of the audio input. That's the secret sauce.
