First try of the MFs + Doepfer VCA&ADSR combo [AUDIO]

Post by shortsleeves » Mon Sep 03, 2012 3:56 am

Hi guys,

This is my first try of the Moogerfoogers + Doepfer Mini Case with VCA&ADSR combo. No keyboard, no sequencer. MF-107 as an oscillator, MF-102 as an oscillator and modulator of the MF-107 signal (that goes through MF-101 first). MF-101 on high resonance for added harmonics, cutoff controlled by the same S&H that controls pitch of both the MF-107 & MF-102. TC Electronic Flashback for short delay, reverb from Ableton.

Here's the link: http://soundcloud.com/shortsleeves/blog ... 2-wrzesnia

Hope you guys like it. Let me know either way :-)

Cheers,
Lukasz

Maybe you'll lie this one better :-)

Here's another patch made with the MoogerFoogers + Doepfer Mini Case (ADSR + VCA) + EHX Deluxe Memory Boy. Slow, monotonous sequence mostly based on timbral variations resulting from using Freqbox's Envelope & FM, the Ring Mod, and the LowPass filter on high resonance with cutoff controlled by a triangle wave sent via CP-251's attenuator (with me manually alternating between normal and inverted CV).

No keyboard or sequencer used – the sequencer is due to the use of a slow triangle wave (from the Ring Mod's LFO output) sent to the input of the sample & hold of CP-251.

Kudos to anyone who manages to listen to the end ;-)

Hey Lukasz.

I prefer the first one, though this is unusual since I'm more a pad guy than a percussion guys as far as synths goes haha.
I fins the textures you get interesting, but sometimes I feel like some background track of fx or... je-ne-sais-quoi could bring much to you tracks. It could be a feedbacked delay mixed very low, or some kind of harmonic pad.

However, I also think you like the way you make this at least as much as the results you get; patching, pressing record and let's see. Maybe some more tweaking, some more evolution could make those minutes more of interest -no offense, just reacting to your challenge of getting he track listened to from the beginning to the end ;)

Anyway, keep up the good sounds, we like it. You make me wanting to test the patching possibilities -I don't have enough cables yet...

Bravo! :)

Steve,

Many thanks for another thoughtful answer!

I guess you're right. I try to do just that by adding spacious reverb in Ableton afterwards, but I still treat the MFoogers as an instrument, and my sketch recordings as recordings of a single instrument, so when doing anything later in Ableton I try not to overdo it, so as not to lose the "singleness" of the whole thing (hope I'm not complicating this too much… :-).

My dream set up would be me with my modular stuff + a drummer (be it with acoustic drums, or playing a drum machine with pads, analog or sample based - anything to keep things interesting, I guess :-).

You're right again – still, the last one was supposed to be some sort of an ambience/background stuff based on changing timbres rather than anything more. Anyway, my aim is to be able to make/play short pieces, approx. 3 minutes long, but with enough going on to make them interesting. But for that I'll have to seriously work on my skills. The thing is, I don't have the time to really practice (I don't have a separate workplace for my music - I have to set it up every time I want to play). Excuse, I know, but still :-)

Once again, many thanks for your answer – especially for saying what you liked, why you liked it, and what you didn't like (the latter being probably the most part helpful :-)

Cheers,
Lukasz

You're very welcome :)

I get the singleness stuff and like very much the one-instrument-on-take way to perform; Keep It Simple and Stupid.
Although I tend to consider a second track is not making things much more complicated. It's sometimes an opportunity to give the first one some new interest...

Anyway, I'm not right nor wrong. Do it like your heart tells you. Just thinking out loud, giving my raw thoughs!

You're right (ha! there, I said it again! ;-) The problem is, I tend to treat these recordings as sketches that are imperfect/incomplete by nature :-) Also, many of them are results of testing new gear.

I hope my current lack of funds, and the constant thinning out of redundant gear to sell to fund new purchases, will put an end to my search for a perfect setup (well, not so much perfect as at least competent), and therefore enable me to master the tools I already have, instead of learning new gear, and – as a result – let me focus on finishing something for a change.

Pleasure first, MoogMate :)

If testing new gear makes you smile, don't feel guilty and enjoy!!

It sucks having to outsource the VCA and envgen jobs to other manufacturers. I went the dotcom route though.

Nice sounds.

I went the cheapest way :-) I too would like to be able to use another MF (what about a VCA + ADSR + Mixer/Multiple in the form of the CP-251?). For now, I enjoy having jacks on the front, but don't enjoy them being 1/8". Still, I like the fact I could add some very nice, and not so expensive modules in the future (this one's first on my list: http://www.schneidersladen.de/en/doepfe ... voltages-2).

If you went modular, you went far from the cheapest way!

For now, I only have 16 HP left in my Mini Case, so I feel quite safe :-)

Anyway, here's another patch. This one feels a little bit like cheating, because it consists of two tracks :-) (Still no keyboard or sequencer in sight). Both tracks made with the same set of MoogerFoogers as usual (CP-251, MF-101, MF-102, MF-105, MF-107) + EHX Deluxe Memory Boy (with delay time controlled by CP-251's S&H 2). Tempo of the faster track is controlled by CP-251's S&H 1 sent to the LFO Input via the Lag Processor. Also used - Doepfer Mini Case with VCA + ADSR, lotsa reverb from Ableton. Enjoy, and as always – please, comment whether you like it, or not :-)

Well, this one doesn't have any Moog in it, but I figured I'd post it anyway :-)

It's a simple drone made with my new Roland HS-60 (Juno 106 in disguise – well, yes, a synth with a keyboard this time :-) sent through Electro Harmonix Deluxe Memory Boy. Reverb from Ableton. Enjoy.

Very cool and definitely spooky!! :)

What is the slo-scillating pad? A couple of low notes always down?

The notes do change from time to time, you know :-) But yes – a few notes are always held in the lower register. Everytime a new note is played the low pass filter opens up along with the ADSR for the DCO. There's a lot of noise mixed in, the release is quite long, the attack quite slow, and the LFO is very slowly modulating both the pulse and the pitch (the pitch in a very narrow range).

I'm still getting to know my HS-60 (I've only had it since thursday night), and there are some things I still hate about it (well, maybe hate is too strong of a word…), but some things I actually like very match. Although I love the unrepeatability of the modular approach, it sure is nice to be able to save presets :-))

Here's another one.

A few notes played on my Roland HS-60 (Juno 106 in disguise), processed through 3 MoogerFoogers: MF-102, MF-101 & MF-105, as well as EHX Deluxe Memory Boy. Two tracks recorded and put together (slightly panned – one to the left, the other to the right). Reverb from Ableton.
