Need some ideas to justify a CP-251 purchase

Post by MBlom » Sat Jun 09, 2012 12:55 pm

I've got a Lowpass, Phaser and Freqbox and use them mainly in two ways:

1. As an effects chain for my bass. I like getting the synth bass sound from the Freqbox, the funky env follower sound from the Lowpass and the vowel kind of sound from the phaser.

2. As a synth, feeding the Freqbox a sequenced synthline from my MonoMachine and syncing it. Usling both the original signal and the synced. The Lowpass and Phaser shape the sound in a standard way.

Besides the three foogers I've got a bass, guitar, Machinedrum (drum machine and sampler), Monomachine (sixtrack synth w sequencer) and a Kenton Pro Solo Mk II. With the latter I've managed to get biphase with the Phaser.

Please give me some examples of how a CP-251 could expand the sonic possibilities. I need to get some enthusiasm worked up to justify a purchase.

Attenuated square wave in addition to envelope on the cutoff on 101 creates a delayed tremolo which is very cool. I use it on clavinet for a great sound, but bass would work too. Sample and hold to oscillating filter or oscillator for random effects is awesome, and mixing different cv signals is great.

My advice is to get either the cp-251 or mp-201, or else some other midi to cv hardware. However, I would also suggest trying taking a new look at what you have and how to do new things with it before spending money on something new.

I've read that. I just wondered if anyone could give me some ideas of what it could do together with my three foogers, not just "it's great to have".

I was thinking the s&h could be interesting with my bass, making it trigger when I play a note and then sending the s&h- value to cutoff freq. If that would work, I'd get an even "synthier" bass.

Tips like that would be much appreciated.

Just read my own signature and I realise I've already decided on a CP-251. So nevermind me, I'm just looking for someone to hold my hand when buying new stuff. But I'm a big boy now ;)

Using the envelope out of the 101 / 107 into the phaser is fun, but it's much more controllable using the attenuators on the CP. Also works if you send that signal to the LFO rate...

You would have a second LFO for modding the sweep in the phaser...

You would have s&h for everything!

The reason everyone says its awesome / fun / cool is because there is a lot you can do with it, and buying it won't be a waste if you enjoy messing with signals.

I forgot to mention the lag with the filter is really fun, gives you slower rise and fall times.

Oh! Down drive filter sounds!! That one of my favorites!

There is a lot it can provide you - especially if you don't have other synth control modules.

Down driving the low pass filter is done by changing the polarity of the envelope signal using the attenuator.

The result is a filter that starts high and travels down. The low pass on its own starts low and travels up.

Think of a wah pedal... "Up drive" is the sound made by rocking from the heel down position to toe down position. "Down drive" is the opposite.
