I think the only way I could get a moog one if I got it used and then it would have to be 8 voices. I’ve heard things about them having issues. I heard them being played on utube . They sounded great. I used to have a polymoog keyboard I had bought used eons ago. It wasn’t the synth version it used some divide down technology I believe. It had a ribbon controller. The keys had weights in them not like a synth action. It had presets. I played a polymoog synthesizer once back in the day and it was cool. I even played got to play a Minimoog modelD. This must have been 1979 probably.I was more interested in fender Rhodes electric pianos then. I eventually got one probably in 1980. A polymoog synth was like $5000 then. My romplers get better strings, organs, pads, then my old polymoog keyboard did. Sampling and digital synths hadn’t come out yet. This was before the Yamaha DX7 and Korg M1.

So I finally got to play a Sequential Prophet in person because I stumbled across in a Guitar Center. It was a Rev 2 and I just couldn't get that warm creamy tone out of it that I get from my Sub 37 and Matriarch. It did a lot of cool stuff and sounded nice but I need that tone. (I had the inclination based on YouTube videos but you can never really tell until you are uncompressed in person.)

Do the other Prophet 6 and 10 have a similar sound? That would be a deal breaker for me.

P6 and P10 are totally different from the Prophet Rev2. I never got on with the sound of the Rev 2 but really like the P6 and own a P10 and it sounds glorious.

Ok, thanks that's good to know. I guess I'll just have to find a play to play a P6 or P10 some day.

Yes, absolutely. The Rev2 16 sounds surprisingly close to the Oberheim OB-X8 in many cases, but nowhere near the P10 or P6.
I was close to sell the Rev2 only when my OB-X8 arrived, but never had this idea before.

@VCO: Your comparison with a baby grand is interesting. A little like comparing apples with potato chips. Both are a cool thing, in a way or another, just one is healthier than the other, where both are not as cool as owning a villa at the sea side :D

Sorry I can’t remember what my comparison was exactly. What I think is analog synths are like acoustic instruments in the sense that they drift out of tune. I recently got an OBX8. I heard a comparison of the OBX8 to the prophet5 rev4 and the prophetRev2 16voice. There were times in the comparison the rev 2 went head to head with the OBX8 and sounded similar. I think the VCOs are something I prefer over the DCOs used in the Rev2 16 voice though. 16 voices are great in layer mode because you have two 8 voices making up a bi timbral patch. The OBX8 is the best analog polyphonic synth
I’ve ever had better than my polymoog keyboard and my OBXA that I used to have. The rev 2 16 voice is a nice sounding synth though , would have been even better if they had used VCOs although it would have raised the price considerably.

I think the big dogs are the prophet10 rev 4 and the Oberhiem OBX8 in my opinion. If I had to choose between the Rev2 16 voice and the prophet 5 rev4 I would still choose the prophet5rev4 Because of its tone. 16 voices in an analog poly synth even if it uses DCOs I offers a lot of flexibility. Although some people wouldn’t care so much about the DCOs and would prefer the large voice count. One of the reasons I went with the Oberhiem OBX8 was because of how large of a presence it has , the panning capabilities and how it offers various oberhiem models and patches and filter types. The prophet5 rev4 and the prophet Rev2 16 voice are the same price now.

Yeah OBX8 is pretty glorious IMO

I wonder if they'll offer an 8 voice addon board for 16 voices: there's lots of room inside

If they did offer an expander card to up the voice count I wonder what it would cost. A 16 voice OBX would be even better.
I use eight note voicings often. Sixteen voices would improve the OBX8 especially when it came to layering. That way you could have two layers with 8 voices each and in stereo. Even 12 voices would make a difference if it would give you the capability of two 6 voice layers. This would rival the sequential rev2 if it was 16 voices and all VCOs as well. 8 voices sounds impressive I would think that 16 voices would make it so it would compete with the Moog One and the korg prologue which offered 16 voices although I think the Korg prologue has a digital engine as well if I’m remembering correctly. Not an exact apples to apples comparison. Wasn’t really sure of the pricing for the Korg. I think the Moog One is probably in a league of its own including effects where the OBX lacks effects. The OBX8 has enough sonic character even without effects.

I ended up getting the OBX8. Best polyphonic analog synth I’ve ever had. I once had an OBXA . Not sure how well it would be holding up by now considering it’s age. I would like to get the prophet 5 rev4 . Compared to the price of the current
Minimoog model D RI it seems like it’s more cost effective. None of these synths are inexpensive. My goal is to get down to 4 synths. That way I would have the Moog Voyager, Sequential Pro 3 , Oberhiem OBX8 and Prophet5 Rev4.

I just purchased a Moog One. I wondered whether it would be redundant to my OB-X8 and Prophet 10rev4. I am only one day into playing with and learning my Moog One, so I have barely scratched the surface. But my initial impression is that it is giving me 70 - 80% new sonic territory that I can't cover with the OB-X8 and Prophet 10rev4. In fairness, the OB-X8 and Prophet 10rev4 each have significant sonic territory that the other synths don't cover. So I think I've stumbled my way into the perfect analog trifecta, and I look forward to actively using all 3 synths for many years to come.

I made a quick chart regarding the strengths and weaknesses of all newer synths I own.

I would think they all would sound great. 👍. The Moog One would be the most expensive.

I own (nearly, as I got an early Waldorf Quantum) four of the synths in this comparison. And I think this chart is near to my experience. But I think the 3rd Wave got a special unique character, once you don't judge it as just a VA synth. And I like its filter character.

Hehe, I just didn't want the 3rd Wave beat the Moog One, because this would look wrong to me for some reason.
Most definitely, the 3rdWave and the MoogOne together cover 99% of all synth sounds I could imagine.
