VST - Difference between Editor and Editor-VI?

Post by Chillminister » Mon Dec 07, 2020 5:04 pm

Hi,

I just got at Subsequent 37, and I love it so far!

When I installed the editor, I got two plugins:

- Subsequent 37 Editor(x64)
- Subsequent 37 Editor-VI(x64)

To my untrained eye, there appears to no difference between the two? Would be great if anyone could shed some light on this.

Also, the editor wants to sync presets with the hardware *every* time I start it, which takes some minutes and gets annoying, is there a way to avoid this?

Seems nobody really knows.

Having the same question, I sent a request to Moog Tech Support yesterday evening. I’ll post their answer.

The Editor/Librarian is a tool for sound design and preset management. Its plug-in version, Subsequent 37 Editor-VI(x64), makes it easier to automate parameters from within your DAW software. The standalone version is ideal for patch management. While both are essentially identical, it should be noted that the editor plug-in is not a virtual instrument and does not process or output audio.

- Subsequent 37 Editor(x64) - Standalone Version (Runs outside of your DAW as a separate application)

- Subsequent 37 Editor-VI(x64) - Plug-In Version (Runs inside your DAW as a plugin on an audio track)

Hope this helps a little...

That does again not explain why there are two versions of the VST plugin with different names available:
  • Subsequent 37 Editor
  • Subsequent 37 Editor (VI)

By pure chance, I just stumbled upon the following explanation in a recent video by Jef Gibbons:
  • Subsequent 37 Editor (VI) can be used as main plugin of an instrument track. The audio has to be routed to a separate audio track.
  • Subsequent 37 Editor can be used as effects plugin on an instrument track where an External Instrument is used as main plugin. No additional audio track is necessary in this scenario.
In the video from 13:15 onwards:
