Sub 37 precise tempo on screen

Post by mowshowitz » Mon Feb 08, 2016 12:23 am

Hey—is there a way to get to the exact tempo on the Sub 37 like you could for the Little Phatty? I miss that feature.

I'd imagine this is a common question but I couldn't find the right keywords to surface it.

Also, what's everyone's favorite master clock? I have a Disaster Area Smartclock and hate it with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.

There isn't a tempo display. It's a much requested feature though, together with a general parameter display.

Okay, cool. Do you happen to know if that is the sort of thing addressable with a firmware update or are all early Sub 37s doomed?

It's certainly technically possible. Let's just hope Moog agrees with us that a parameter display is a good idea :)

So I'm kind of curious. Although I agree that having a BPM display would be nice, why do so many people feel it's an absolute necessity?

The only reason I can think of for wanting to dial in a precise, specific tempo is if you're using the Sub37 as a master MIDI clock and have specific BPM requirements. But if that were the case, I would expect you would have some other more appropriate clock source, like a drum machine, DAW, or a dedicated MIDI master clock device.

If you're expecting to match the tempo of other instruments (like a drum machine) by setting them both to the same BPM value, that's probably not going to work as well as you'd like. One machine's 120 BPM likely won't exactly match another machine's 120 BPM, at least not for long periods of time. If tempo matching is a requirement, syncing the machines with MIDI clock is a better solution.

So why is a BPM display such a critical requirement for some on the Sub37?

Eagerly awating enlightenment.

For me its to be able to live jam with others, and not have to have things midi'd up. This can provide more organic options to tempo.

I think I'd use the tap tempo button in that situation, although if you want things to stay in sync there's no way around connecting devices and sending clock.

It works well without clock sync, if you know what you're doing. In this video, Minilogue (the group, not the synth ^^) reveal they perform kind of unsynched, too. They have to do live beatmatching. Which might be a reason why their stuff sounds so organic and alive.

Bump!

I'd really like to see this feature added as well!
And as some have mentioned, it would also be great to be able to see the value of all knobs on the screen.

I'm another Sub37 player who's hoping this is in the works. Hopefully the next firmware update will let us see the tempo, bpm and clock subdivision for the arp and each LFO. :)
