Sub 37 Tuning SC 1 OSC 2 issue?!

Post by mikdemik » Tue Dec 08, 2015 5:26 am

Hi.

I am owning a sub 37 for about a weak now. It's great, but I am woundering, if it's normal that I can not synchronize Osc2's and Osc1's pitch exactly. There is always a slight drift. (Analog Newbie)

Furthermore, I've noticed that, while modulating through the waves, there is a short dropout between saw- and pulsewave. It's not a seamless transition.

It's no big deal, I just wanted to ask.

Regards, Michi.

the drift/phasing sounds normal to me and is one of the most pleasing aspects of analog imo - at least moog provided a beat frequency control too.

re the saw>pulse mod, modulation adds or subtracts from the currently selected parameter position (eg the knob position), so if you send too much positive modulation relative to the starting position, it goes to a zero width pulse wave (which you can't do with the knob alone) hence the dropout. Maybe it's that which you are hearing?

Hi...

The only thing what I can say is that there is a dropout between saw- and pulse wave. is Just a normal behavior .

Warm regards Luloop

Thank you very much for the quick answers.

Ok, just wanted to make sure, there is nothing broken. The phasing has its charm :-).

Yeah, it was a modulation problem. After a fiew tries it worked without dropouts. Good to know that its a normal behaviour. Unfortunately it was really flashy.

As I said, Analog Newbie :-).

I just did a quick video showing the transition on a scope - this is with the initial wave set to the mid point (12 o'clock), using a sine wave lfo at +5 mod amt.

paul_sub37 is right about the tuning of analog oscillators, they will always be a *little* out - but that's what makes 'em great :) One trick you can use is to get them as close as possible then use Osc Sync to lock them in.

The little bump between saw and square is normal. In fact, I use it as a guide to get the best saw, which ouccurrs just before that audible bump.

If it's due to the oscillators not tracking closely enough across the keyboard, you can run the automatic oscillator calibration procedure in the global menu:

CALIBRATION -> NOTE CAL -> hit SAVE

Hi,,,
I love it when the Osc´s are a little little bit out of tune. Has a good feel..
I found that out when I put the new firmware version 1.1.13....Is a bit out of tune...Minimoog feel...

But better you CALIBRATE you Sub 32.. like Dr.Justice writes.

Thank you all for clearing things up for me. I start to get used to it and I like that there is so much movement in the sound. I ran through the calibration process before and nothing changed. So I decided to ask :). Thanks for the interessting video.

Regards, Michi.

Hi there,
I also found out (init preset) , that when you have a narrow pulse ( turn knob clock wise till the end.) and turn the knob slowly to Square , (turn knob anti clock wise ), there is also a little gab in between.

I see! It doesn't bother me anymore after I worked my way into it.
