This preset has a metallic, FM-like sound; and I can't figure out how it's done. Could anyone tell me how?
I thought maybe it was done by setting one of the LFOs to high-range and then modulating one of the VCOs but that doesn't seem like it.

Re: Sub-37 Bank 8, Preset 11 "Rubber Glass"
Did you already try to tear the sound apart and listen to what happens?
IE; turn oscillators off, change filter, change osc octaves, LFO section..?
That's what I usually do when i'm exploring a sound..

Looks to be the combination of overdriving OSC 1 & 2 levels, multidrive and resonance on low and high pitched triangle waves:
This is pretty much how the patch works:
OCT 1 = 16'
OCT 1 level = 10
OCT 1 wave = triangle
No SUB
OCT 2 = 2'
OCT 2 LEVEL = 10
OCT 2 wave = triangle
FREQ = +7
FILTER = a touch higher than 500Hz
RES = 3.25
MULTIDRIVE = 10
FILT SLOPE = 24
EG AMT = 1.5
KB TRACK = 1:1
FEG:
A - 1 ms
D - 1 sec
S - 0
R - 1 sec
AEG
A - 1 ms
D - 1 sec
S - 0
R - 1 sec

Re: Sub-37 Bank 8, Preset 11 "Rubber Glass"
I'll have to try again, but I did everything mentioned already. I copied the settings (as mentioned by paul_sub37) to an init patch and couldn't replicate the effect.
the LFO section seems to do nothing.
filter settings, including multidrive don't have any special effect.
The only thing that seems to make the metallic ring go away is turning off one of the two oscillators.
Each OSC on its own simply sounds like its respective waveform - as soon as the other one gets brought into the mix, they start to ring.
OSC2 + Sub has the same effect as OSC1 + OSC2. I have not yet tried just OSC1 + Sub, I also tried different waveforms on both oscillators.
Almost like there's some sort of hidden cross-mod going on here. At first, I thought it was just new harmonics being created by the combination of oscillator tuning and multidrive but it's all there with multidrive turned to 0.
Maybe it's all in my head and I'm just crazy.

Re: Sub-37 Bank 8, Preset 11 "Rubber Glass"
It definitely works.
Here's my exact steps to replicate it:
Select an empty preset - in my case that's Bank 15, Patch 9
Press PANEL to enter panel mode
Press and hold PANEL to init the PANEL parameters
Press PRESET then press PANEL so that all the knobs are in sync with settings in panel mode
turn off SUB, NOISE and FDBK
turn off GLIDE
make sure there's no MOD being applied to anything in MOD 1/2
then go through it using the setting from the post I made before
save it to the preset slot
I've attached the resulting patch - I've also included a couple of other patches that are based on the same basic thing of overdriven OSC 1/2 + multidrive + resonance.
You can get a softer bell type sound just by having levels greater than 5 for triangle wave OSC 1/2 with no resonance and no multidrive. Also, EG AMT and KB TRACK have a big impact on the quality of the sound.
one last thing, you might want to enable multi-trig and reset for FEG and AEG so that it triggers cleanly on each key press.

for reference, here's a link to a quick .wav demo showing the original rubber glass patch (bank 8 preset 11), the rubber_glass_like.syx patch built from scratch as per this thread (but with EG AMT set to 1) and the other 2 variations that used hard sync (bell.syx and bell_2.syx):

It definitely does! The lower notes have a steel drum sort of sound. Very cool.paul_sub37 wrote:It definitely works.

There's another way to get a bell type sound - that's using very short VCF looping
