SUB 37 Mod Wheel ignored in PANEL MODE

Moving the mod wheel in PANEL MODE has no effect for me. The mod wheel value is frozen at the position it had in PRESET MODE, eg if I am in an INIT preset and move the mod wheel to MIN and then enter PANEL MODE, if I adjust PITCH AMT then nothing happens even if I move the mod wheel.

If I then go back to PRESET MODE, move the mod wheel to MAX and then go back to PANEL MODE, the PITCH AMT works as expected applying full 100% modulation - but moving the mod wheel doesn't affect it whilst in PANEL MODE.

If I create a patch in PANEL MODE with the mod wheel set to anything other than OFF, then I can only hear the effect of that if I save the patch and use it in PRESET MODE, where the wheel works with the patch as expected.

I'm seeing the same behaviour for both MOD 1 and MOD 2.

PANEL MODE also ignores MOD WHEEL values coming in via MIDI, but I can see that it is transmitting MOD WHEEL values via MIDI in PANEL MODE.

This seems weird behaviour in PANEL MODE given I thought the whole point of that mode was that everything works as per the physical positions on the control surface. Is this PANEL MODE mod wheel behaviour by design?

The workaround for me is to get the physical/internal controllers in sync in PANEL MODE before starting to create the patch (which I do by pressing PANEL MODE > hold INIT > PRESET MODE > PANEL MODE), save it, then edit it in PRESET MODE.

That's pretty weird, I don't think it's by design. At least it doesn't behave that way on mine.

I assume you've updated to the latest firmware or your unit came with the latest (1.1.0). See http://forum.moogmusic.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23888 if you're not sure.

Things I would try:

- Make sure the mod wheel is enabled in PANEL mode:
  • - press the PANEL button
    - press the MOD1 CONTROLLERS button
    - make sure the first item in the display does not say MOD WHEEL: OFF. (Try setting it to +100% if it's not already there.)
- Reset the system settings (everything on the GLOBAL and MIDI menus) to their factory defaults. See page 49 in the manual for details.

Beyond that (and if no one else on the forum comes up with other ideas), I'd contact Moog support.

Before updating to v1.1.0 I had a similar problem with the panel mode.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried the INIT SETTINGS reset - no luck.

Mine came with 1.1.0 from the factory, but I've just reinstalled it and it's still the same behaviour. Really odd that the mod wheel works as expected in PRESET mode, just not in PANEL mode - especially seeing as it is sending the correct MIDI out when the mod wheel is moved in PANEL mode.

The freezing of the mod wheel value when going from PRESET>PANEL makes it seem like this is a software thing, but that doesn't make sense for it to not be affecting other people with 1.1.0.

OK, here's one other thing to try. It's really off-the-wall, but try doing a Quick Erase of the sequencer while in PANEL mode. Just hold the BANK button while turning the PATTERN knob to the REC position. That erases all the sequencer data. (See page 20 in the manual for details.)

I had some sort of weird behavior (don't remember what it was) that went away after doing the quick erase.

I agree that it sounds like a software issue, or at least that something in your unit has gotten into a strange state. The sequencer can save mod wheel data as part of the sequence, so there IS a connection and that's why I'd suggest the quick erase.

Moose - you're a genius. That worked!

How weird is that though - there wasn't even a sequence attached to the patch.

Thank you so much for that suggestion - there's not a chance in hell I would have tried that.

Yay! Glad that worked for you. I discovered it purely by accident.
