Sub 37 with modular

Post by newgreyarea » Mon May 25, 2015 2:39 pm

So, I have yet to hook up my Sub 37 to my eurorack modular . . and seeing as I have to send it back to Asheville for repairs, it doesn't look like that's happening soon. :?

I'd love to hear/see/read about what some others are doing with it an a modular. Looks like we can route the CV inputs to various destinations. Woot! Does it play well with others? Can you get some crazy-whack FM going on? My mind is spinning with idea but they'll have to wait!! Ahhh!!

Anyways, if you have any vids or even some little instagram posts I'd love to see them.

Thanks!

Just getting this started. I'm building a small modular rack to
1) Utilize the new CV destinations.
2) Add another OSC
3) Do some post processing (HPF, etc)

So far everything's working well; it's just a slow slog buying a module every paycheck.

I've just completed building a PAiA 9700 rack. On its own the unit is outstanding. My goal is to have it and the Sub 37 be great friends. I'm a modular newbie so it'll take some time but I'll post back with my experiences.

I too would like to hear what others are doing with their Subs and modulars.

I'm getting some interesting modulation using the Pittsburgh Modular Vilfo, Generator/GenX and Envelope modules to CV the Sub 37 filter and volume. I also recorded the CV's in Ableton to quantize and reshape a few of them and then used my Motu 828 to send those processed CV's to the Sub 37. Fun stuff....

@flareless, congrats on the PAiA synth! My first synth was a 2700 series I built from perf board, Semiconductors bought from Digikey, and resistors, caps, and pot's from TV parts I got from the dump :-) The panels came from a sacrificed erector set. It sounded amazing! I then bought 2700 & 4700 modules to augment my frankensynth. the 9700 series modules look so cool!

@MRNUTTY Thanks! The build was a real adventure. It must have been really tough back with the earlier kits. Yours sounds creative to say the least. The new ones are so well documented and laid out. I'm a novice at electronics and even more so at modular synthesis but I thought this was a good place to start. I've been able to create some pretty cool sounds with it.

Yesterday I connected the 9700's LFO to various Sub 37 CV ports. The results were quite interesting. The 9700 is sending the output of OSC1 to the VCF's Modulation trigger so as the note played on the PAiA changes the width of the wave changes. The results are kind of cool. Later today I'll try to get a sound sample on SoundCloud and put it into this post.

@flareless, my scrap part synth was butt-ugly! But! It sure sounded sweet for a 1st time synth to my young ears. PAiA puts together good kits that are accessible to a wide range of users. That fact that they sound great is even better!

I would love to hear a sample of your stuff with the PAiA gear. I'm debating a modular build, and the Synthesizers.com stuff seems to fit within my price range, but PAiA stuff would be a hoot too :-) As I remember it was just 0 to +5VDC though*.

Too bad, PAiA doesn't have 1/4 inch jacks too.

edit: nope, it's 0-10VDC for the 9700.

I've created a sound file of the Sub 37 interface to the PAiA 9700.
