4-voice paraphony

Post by Poptones » Fri Mar 27, 2015 12:14 am

Ever wondered what a poly-chained Sub 37 would sound like?

https://soundcloud.com/pauldither/4-voi ... b-37-demos

No effects, just two simultaneous tracks of a duophonicly played string pad.

Very nice sound. I wonder if poly chained Sub 37's would sound as nice. Does poly chain support duo mode or run each synth mono? Might have to chain 4 of them.

I'm not sure i understand what you mean, but the topic title says "4 voice paraphony", the description of the track in the link says it's two Sub37's and he litterally says "Ever wondered what a poly-chained Sub 37 would sound like?" to which you reply "I wonder if poly chained Sub 37's would sound as nice.". So i'm thinking paraphony is indeed supported over chain, since the topic poster has 4 voices, with 2 synths. Or am i missing something? If you want a reference of what a regular polychain could sound like (no paraphony), there are youtube video's and soundcloud tracks of up to 6 slim phatties in poly.

As for this sound, am i mistaking that this is basically the same result as chaining 4 slim phatties together in poly, but turning OSC2 all the way down? Four voices over (each) one VCO?

I assume the op has one synth and has recorded 2 tracks. If that is the case then the result could be quite different than if poly chained (but could be the same).

Gotcha. I was indeed assuming he had chained two Sub37's.

It would all depend on how the keyboard is scanned. Would you be able to play 4 individual notes or would osc 1 of second synth track osc 1 of 1st and osc 2 of second track osc 2 of first.

Sorry for causing confusion. Yes, I have indeed only one Sub 37, so no real poly-chaining took place for the recording. Just a couple of 4-voice chords split up on two MIDI and audio tracks.

Whether duo mode would work just as simple in poly-chain mode I don't know. I assumed so. But you're right: the question about how note priorities would operate in poly-chain mode is still left open. So please regard the title of this thread to be highly speculative.

no, overdubbing a duo patch will not sound the same as 4 sub 37s together. duo mode shares oscillators, so you get half of the oscillators that 4 sub 37's would have.
overdub your sub 37 4 times (once for each note) to get a better idea of how it would sound.

Hang on, I will patch my four 37's together to find out - I wish!

I'm still dying to try out poly chaining my Sub 37 with the Sub Phatty but the Sub P doesn't have support for it yet. I'm hoping the voice allocation will support duo mode and not force the 37 to mono. Three voice para would be a good start.

Does anyone know how duo mode behaves when poly chained?

Thank you, Toine. It's not a factory preset. Basically it's two oscillators at almost square wave (one a bit above, one a bit below) with the pulse width modulated by a sine wave and the filter being modulated by the envelope. Kind of what one would do for a pad, which is why I was curious how it would sound like if you doubled the paraphony. So I wrote down a couple of 4-note chords and recorded each half of the chords in duo mode via MIDI. After I bounced the MIDI track to audio I put the according halves on top of each other, so that they would play back simultaneuosly. It's fake 4-voice paraphony.
