Sub37 gig bag vs case?

Post by ColorForm2113 » Tue Mar 24, 2015 4:29 pm

So I finally got to play a Sub37 in person ...OMG it's everything I hoped it would be (granted a couple software bugs but nothing Amos won't be able to fix  ) and I think I need to own one. I'd have to sell my Voyager to fund this, but that would allow me to have some left over cash for more modules...so win win!

On to my question though, do you guys feel that the gig bag is sturdy enough? I don't fly with it or anything. It just gets packed into the car occasionally. I went with the ata flight case with my Voyager because I wanted to make sure that the panel didn't flip up or bounce around...obviously not a concern with the Sub37
My modular so far: Q104, Q106 x2, Q107, Q108, Q109 x2 , Q116, Q118, Q127 w/Q140, Q130, STG Wave Folder, Mixer and Mankato playing with Moog Voyager, VX-351, CP-251, MF-104M x2 ( STEREO!) Volca Beats and Bass, Arturia Beat step

the gig bag is decent. It'll protect against small bumps/ scuffs but it is not going to do much for major spills. if you are careful ( and dont let other move your stuff and dont stack anything on top of it.... ) it should suffice. I have one and it is adequate for local gigs and going to/ from practice. I think I would upgrade to a hard case if I were to do any out-of-town stuff.

it is nice and light which is a +.

Cool thanks, sounds like it will be fine for me then. Yeah Voyager + case = sore the next morning when I haven't staged it out in awhile LOL so being lighter will be a huge bonus

Oof! I can imagine. My sub 37 is heavy enough on its own w/o an additional 30lbs of case.

I agree with charbot. It's fine for local gigs and short commutes. You still need to be careful about how it gets placed next to other gear in the vehicle. But then again, this little beast deserves a place of honor when being transported.

Is the gig bag the same as the Little Phatty gig bag? The only thing bothering me about that, is the straps to keep the synth in place. They're made of this typical rough material, and i'm afraid they will leave marks, especially on my new black matte sidepanels. When i carry the gig bag, i try to do so as smoothly as humanly possible to minimize friction. Maybe i should just put a cloth between the Phatty and the straps.

Same as the LP bag, the straps shouldn't go near the side panels, they cross over the synth like a big x. If the side panels are that delicate I wouldn't use any case or move it around at all. The straps have never damaged my LP but is a stage, so it's surfaces are pretty sturdy.

Perhaps you could spray varnish the side panels for extra protection?

I dont think that the straps will mar the sides. I usually dont fasten the straps, but it is more fear of how they cross right over the knobs. I dont like the idea of any lateral force pushing knobs from the side.

I think the design may have worked better w/ the little phatty's less clustered panels. Even w/o the straps tho', it is pretty secure.

Thanks for the heads up about the straps. I might keep a towel in there with it to give a little extra protection then.

^I keep two small camping pillows in there to fill the space over the keys. Also not using the straps because I think they fall over the knobs awkwardly. Other than that, the case has served it purpose well, getting the Sub37 safely to/from practice and gigs.

The gigbag is useful. I use it on a weekly basis since several months now, I did not notice any mark on my... almost ten years old LP2SE.
On the other hand, I'm not superconfident in the backpack straps sewings. Time will tell.

Are you guys sure the internal straps should get crossed? I remember -vaguly- I could not achive that and I'm used to attach them above the top knob row and over the keys. I'll try again.

When i cross them, they pass by the four corners of my LP, and i have to either guide them over the sidepanels, or over the top and bottom. And neither is ideal.

Edit: after trying again, i'm pretty sure it's not intended to cross them over the Phatty. You will bump against the LFO knob, you will keep a number of keys pressed down... and the angle of the stitching of the straps is really not indicating they should be crossed. While if you do not cross them, they fit perfectly underneath the pitchbend and modwheel and above the knobs, without pressing any of the keys down.

PS: just noticed, i can fit a Slim Phatty (wrapped inside something soft) upside down into the crease behind the Little Phatty's backside. It fits rather snugly.
