If you use vst you are propably using a DAW, or not? Does your DAW not have its own arp plugin of its own? I use the arp plugin of my Cubase 7 / 7.5 and its usulally more flexible than most of the simple arps that come with most hardware synths.

Any suggestions for Live 9? The inbuilt arp is pretty basic and more suited to live situations, i'm giving kirnuarp a go, however keen to get some more thoughts on others you some may also be using.

Glad to be of help.
Live's arpeggiator is okay if you'd like to do basic stuff. Kirnu Cream is by far the most complex software arpeggiator and sequencer I know. It may take a little while to get into it, but you'll definitely be rewarded with more control over lots of details and variations.
