Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
There have been quite a few comparisons between the Sub Phatty and the Minitaur, Little Phatty, and even the Voyager. Since I kind of look at the Sub Phatty as being a "reincarnation" of the MiniMoog I would like to hear back from those of you that have both. How do they compare sound wise? Can the Sub Phatty emulate the MiniMoog in any way? What are the major similarities and differences in tone and function.
I don't own a MiniMoog but I did play on one many years ago. For me the Sub Phatty brings back that same feeling I got when I first starting tweaking knobs on the MiniMoog. And the same feeling of sonic delight!
I would love to hear what you all have to think regarding these two great synths!

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
There are sounds that sound much alike on both. But each is also able to do so many sound that other is just not able to do.
The sonic general character is not identical at all. Actually the Sub Phatty reminds me sometimes very much of my Moog Prodigy.
But the very same sound character is one thing, playing and tweaking another one. And I love turning knobs on the Sub Phatty as much as on my Minimoog.
Maybe it is just because of the Sub Phatty being the new toy, but I did not use the Voyager in the past weeks.

keep on turning these Moog knobs

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
I've been lucky enough to have the Sub Phatty, Voyager, and a 1975 Minimoog D around in the last few months, and honestly, the Sub Phatty captures what I've been missing since the Mini went home. More aggressive than the voyager, but, with more control than the Minimoog. It's really filled the gaps around here for bass lines, sequenced gnarliness, and noisy atmospheric stuff.
Couldn't be happier, really. I can mimic many of the sounds we recorded with the model D to a point that I doubt anybody could tell the difference.

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
I've found the Sub to be closest any of the new modern Moogs have come to the sound of a model D in terms of presence and pure "gnarl". The only thing that puts it far from the model D is the tuning stability. It's just rock solid no matter what temperature its at, unlike a vintage like the D. This ultra-stable tuning is fantastic in most cases. If you want a little pitch variation, you can always feed a slow, slewed, random LFO into the pitch. Or just play with the fine tuning knob.

Any other feedback from a lucky owner of both Minimoog Model D and Sub Phatty ?...

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
ive dreamed of having a Minimoog for over 20 years. Ive never owned one but ive played one many times in sessions over the years.
i also see the Sub Phatty as the ultimate Minimoog re-incarnated. Since the day i learned about it, i have never been so excited about a new synth, it looked like my dreams come true. And since the day the Sub Phatty arrived the burning pain in my chest to own a Minimoog that has been there for 20 years has gone.

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
I'm wandering if the MF-107 FreqBox can compensate the missing third oscillator of the Sub Phatty...

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
Any old oscillator will do - I sometimes use my PAIA FatMan through the Ext In and that sounds pretty big. Lately though, I've been using the oscillator on my MiniBrute through the Ext - that's another thing altogether!Del-Uks wrote:I'm wandering if the MF-107 FreqBox can compensate the missing third oscillator of the Sub Phatty...
Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
Interesting... how do you sync the MF-107 FreqBox to the Sub Phatty without any CV outputs ?

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
Don't know about the Fooger but I use MIDI via DIN
Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
right, if you have another MIDI-controllable synth you can control it using MIDI from the Sub Phatty and route the audio of the other synth into the Sub Phatty ext. input.
In the case of the freqbox you would need a CV output in order to do true pitch control of the freqbox... however you could use it as a hard-synced oscillator that did not track the pitch of the keys and it would still sound pretty cool. Not the same effect, but also cool. Of course if you have a MIDI/CV converter of some sort you might be able to bring that into the mix to useful effect as well. It would need to be adjustable though, since the freqbox pitch-CV response is not calibrated (it's a guitar pedal, in theory, not a modular oscillator)

...then, I guess that's where we desperately need an MF-107M(idi) in the near future... ;-pAmos wrote:Of course if you have a MIDI/CV converter of some sort you might be able to bring that into the mix to useful effect as well. Thank you for the inputs Amos !

Re: Sub Phatty vs. MiniMoog
I already suggested that we need an external oscillator box with MIDI (and CV) in plus audio out. My thinking was a clone of the Osc 2 section of the Sub Phatty in a box like a Fooger...I would buy that in a flash!

I'd love to have a white noise generator / radio receiver built into a jack plug - anybody up to the challenge?
(For now, an MP3-player is doing that job)
