model D, oscillators 1 & 2 "LO" setting...uses?

OSC 3 "LO" setting is straightforward to use, but OSC 1 & OSC 2 also have a "LO" setting, that is not so obviously applied to anything

does anyone have any tips/tricks for putting this to use?

thx!

Geiger counter impressions? :D

I know what you mean - they seem a bit pointless. You can can make some interesting rhythmic patterns with them in LO mode, and using a lot of emphasis/resonance on the filter can add pitches to the clicks controllable with the cut-off can make raindrop type effects.

Geiger counter!

yes I was thinking maybe with cranked resonance you could get some audio effects out of them, thanks!

too bad you can't tap into them as modulators

Actually I think this came up here, on the forum before. I'm getting a strong sense of Deja Vu: someone explained whether the LO setting is still running, regardless of where the Range is set

Actually never thought of it before. Was playing around with it: Different waveforms gives different pulses. Together with filter, noise etc some interesting pulsating sounds such heart beats (realistic with the resonance controlling the opening/closing). With the mod wheel an unhealthy heart beat could be generated. Further earthquake, old school electronic kick drum etc. Not something I would use every day, but the “heart beat generator” was cool.

hey, some good ideas there, thanks AP!

never thought of switching the wave forms around: but that makes a lot of sense

on the Model D Reissue, the extra LFO by the mod wheel could do some interesting things too, interacting with them

kind of like "Inception" : an LFO modulating an LFO, modulating an LFO ( or two ! )

Here's a neat trick: turn off all VCOs, turn up the emphasis control on the filter until it self-oscillates, then back off the control until the oscillation stops. Set filter cutoff to "2".

Now set VCO1 to "LO" and ramp waveform, and turn it all the way up in the mixer. When you press a key, you should hear a repetitive damped sine wave whose frequency is the filter cutoff frequency.

What is happening is the steep vertical part of the ramp waveform - a step edge - is disturbing the stability of the almost oscillating filter; as it suddenly is "bumped", this triggers a "ringing" that settles to nothing AKA damped sine wave.

EEs in the forum will recognize this as a unit step critically damped response of a second order lowpass system. Google it to see the scary math analysis.

So what?

Change the waveform to square. Now the repetition is double because that waveform has TWO step edges. Change to other non-square pulse shapes and it sounds like a slap echo effect. Use real slow glide and play different keys (with or without keyboard tracking on the filter).

Now set VCO3 to "LO", square waveform, turn off OSC 3 CONTROL, turn it all the way up in the mixer, and use VCO3 tuning knob (whose range is much wider with OSC 3 CONTROL turned off) to sweep VCO3 pitch while playing different keys. Set NOISE to PINK, set MODULATION MIX to about 7 (modulation noise is actually "red" noise with noise switch in "PINK" position), turn on FILTER MODULATION, turn up mod wheel. Experiment with different waveforms of VCO3.

Add VCO2 at "LO" and any pulse waveform with offset tuning for a real non-repetitive effect. You can simulate hearty belches, acid indigestion, boiling wicked witches caldron, heartbeats, bubbles in the river of molten wax at the diabolical villains' lair...

Things you didn't know you could do with a Minimoog!

You know you have reached the pinnacle of sound design when you can synthesize fart noises on a simple Minimoog

Zero effects. Fart noises, heartbeats, boiling wicked witches caldron, belches.

Will Gregory from Goldfrapp says that they used to have competitions to see who could synthesise the wettest fart sounds and Minimoog was best at it.
