Programming tricks on a Model D

Post by Hooch » Thu Aug 18, 2016 2:47 am

New here and I am searching for some in depth tricks and tips
on using the Model D live.

I have owned one but it was long ago before the ancients
created the interwebs.
I do know my way around subtractive synthesis techniques
Dialing and playing at the same time
is no problem.

I guess I'm plainly asking where does a brother go
if your wanting to extract the most out of using it live?
Books, other forums, blogs, you name it.

I also use a Kurzeil Forte and Nord Stage 2
along with the gazinta's and gazouta's
to make it sound right.

I've got an Eventide H9 that is patched just
for the Moog and have been looking at
an Xotic EP boost to give it a bit of a bump
for leads.
I'm not married to the H9 and would replace it
if something else is better suited to the D's
sonic character.

Thanks for any suggestions or other avenues
of research.

I saw that. Thank you.
I think the patch sheets that have been around
all these years teach the mantra of subtlety.

Don't turn everything up to 11.
It's a very powerful instrument.
Slight changes yield sonic gold.

Most everything these days is
Super-Saw Mega-Modularitron.
Something Ultraman would save the
world from that makes a loud
thunderous crackling
SCRaaAWWK!!
as it swoops in for the attack.

Your reply was hilarious, I had tears rolling down my face, you're gonna have the younger generation looking up Ultra man if they read this. I got my Model D last week and to my relief, no zipper in the back, must be the real D-eal. In the front panel, i'm always watching the overload light to see if i need to get the Model D closer to the SUN!!!

BTW, i have a H9 MAX, just bought another Core, and having a blast with them. I have the D, three mothers, and an ARP odyssey going through both and then through a Social Entropy Engine, shortly after playing one note through all that I stumbled across the meaning a life ... :-)

Hahaha. Thanks.
Yes. I owned a Moog in the 70's.
Ultraman and Uh Oh! Chongo! were on after school tv.
Banana splits right?
And lest we forget. Dark Shadows!!
That show scared the crap out of me for some reason.

My first gigs were Moog, a Farfisa, and a Roades suitcase.
I had the hot set up. Throw a Mutron phaser on there and
It's Disco time.

I just got a new minimoog today and I think I might be able to help you. What you want to do would be easy with a few eurorack modules. You need an attenuator (pretty cheap) and a CV source like an LFO/ oscillator etc. The attenuator is able to limit the amount of CV that enters the mod input down to a minimum of 0 Volts. the LFO would provide you mod source. So: LFO - Attenuator- Minimoog.

I hope that helps...

Royalston,

Not sure if your answering the right question there.
Or perhaps you saw my Mini Moog vibrato thread?
If that was it, I got an answer from Moog about it using the CP 251
that was what I was after. Kind of.

What I really need is a very small module that can take a control
voltage from the pressure out on the back and give me a scaleable LFO
that increases its depth via the increase of pressure on the keys.

This LFO needs to go through 0 to get a vibrato centered on the root pitch.
If not it will just be adding pitch.
Which is ok if your going for a fretted guitar type of vibrato.

Something small enough to fit inside. Or perhaps velcroed to the top.
That way it could all be easily cased and left in place.
I would need to extract a small amount of power from somewhere too.

I'm seeing all these crazy cool cords with processors built in to the jacks
now. Something like that would be pretty darn smart and handy for lots of things
in the modular world. Maybe with a Bluetooth interface. Hmmm....

one thing i will add Hooch...dont mess with patch sheets and pencils.

In this day and age, your digital camera is your friend :) just snap a pic of the panel ...done. Just make sure you label and catalog your jpgs well and you can build up a great library of sounds to easily dial back.

i shudder to think how many days of your life was lost in the 70s sketching out knob positions with a pencil and paper.

Cheers,
Blackout
