Smoke coming out of Moog...

Post by Fountainel » Fri Apr 17, 2015 4:20 am

I was making a song, and had the Moog running into Ableton playing a MIDI loop I created over and over while I was mixing and producing around the loop.

I had the synth turned on for 10+ hours, and tonight just running the melody for probably 4 or 5 hours (not constantly, but whenever I hit playback) when suddenly my sound was completely screwed up, and glitchy sounding. I kept pressing playback, trying to figure out what was wrong.

I looked at the screen on the Moog and it was running through every part of the screen, and going through every number at the speed of light like someone was turning all the knobs and pressing all the buttons 100 times a second. I thought it was receiving weird MIDI messages from something somehow.

I turned it off and on, pressed playback again, and I heard a spark sound, and smoke came out of the 12V LAMP, so I instantly turned it off, and unplugged everything and just let it sit. It didn't feel hot to touch.

What happened exactly? Would it be completely dead now? I'm scared to turn it on and try again.

I most certainly would NOT turn it on again !!
Send it to a qualified Moog technician for inspection as soon as possible !!

Most probably a PSU failure.
Follow fyvewytches advice.

Good luck.

Check your serial number.

Your unit may have the Ace Frehley option pre-installed by the factory:

I wonder if there is any relation to the possible PSU failure and the fact that the synth was used for 10 hours without any rest. Is it safe to use it all day/night long?

The PSU inside a Voyager is made by Mean Well (a reputable switching type PSU manufacturer) and is very sturdy and designed to be powered on for hours and even days at a time. But like any other electronic device it is not totally immune against premature component failure, although quite rare these days.

If this IS a PSU failure, which still remains to be seen, although most likely.
