Do you layer the Voyager with other synths?

Post by MBlom » Thu Sep 18, 2014 5:43 pm

I was working with my MonoMachine (lovely digital six track sequencer synth by Elektron) trying to tweak some nice Kraftwerk-ish FM bass sounds out of it. Managed to get nice character out of it, but it really kicked when I layered it with a plain unfiltered sine wave. So I started to think about layering the Voyager, haven´t tried it yet. I´m a big fan of snappy bass sounds and long bass notes with slowly pronounced resonance sweeps. But as you know the bass diminishes with high resonance. Would it be overdoing it with a, lets say, FreqBox or Minitaur parallel to the Voyager?

Returned the MuRF i bought recently and for the money it was worth I could get a Minitaur. Been having the crush for it since it came out but couldn´t justify a purchase. Maybe a Minitaur parallel to the Voyager would allow me to really focus on getting character out of the Voyager and let the Minitaur do the kicking. Or maybe it´s just too much...

I'm still waiting for Moog to repair the analog board on mine so no layering for a while yet for me.

But... I am eager to try it out with my Virus TI2 kbd which has oodles of lovely wavetables to meld / blend / shape the Voyager's three on-board Oscs.

I also discovered this video yesterday which shows a great technique in using the Voyager's third Osc as a modulation source to really kick a bass patch up another level - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXHBvhlYGQs

Tried having a slightly filtered, no resonance square wave at 36´from the MonoMachine together with my go-to-Voyager bass patch, and it was really nice having that hollow but steady bottom end solid while tweaking away on the Voyagers filter decay, resonance and cutoff.

I´m thinking it might be too much Moog having a Minitaur doing that job. But on the other hand, I want something that can deliver that bass like a hammer. And can there really be too much Moog?

Please let me know what you think!

Hi Mr. MBlom,
quoting your last post here:
But on the other hand, I want something that can deliver that bass like a hammer. And can there really be too much Moog?
Big and powerful P.A., over 120 DB ! It must be possible to align 8 tracks of Moog instruments together but it must require lot of techniques,
equipment, experience, etc. I hope I will try the Voyager with a piano someday because they are so far apart that it would bring a different
color to the performance, not to many notes at same time, letting both machines breath...easy does it ! That too is witnessing our times...
Same trick with any instruments...hoops, I'm saying too much ! :?

salutations !

I layer mine with my Nord electro 3 sounds great with a funky clav wah, but I imagine layering it with another synth would just get humongous, probably would swallow up all the other instruments and possibly band members if you lucky :D

Played my Voyager with a Minitaur yesterday and I really liked how solid and massive it got. Had the Minitaur without resonance and cutoff quite low, so just a low end there to keep a steady bass while tweaking the cutoff, resonance and decay on the Voyager. It made quite a difference! I think I managed to make it sou d massive and yet restricted. Tried to use them so I won't take up too much space in my band and I think there might be a place for it. And of course it also matters how you play it. With some air between the notes it could be what takes a gig to that wow-level without being too much. And it definitely made me enjoy plaing bass a lot more!

I also tried to make sounds that are allowed to take some space. Will be playing hip hop beats at a party together with just an MPC on drums. They're gonna feel the bass!!!

You know what is really fun, layering the Voyager with the Voyager by using a loop pedal. I have a Boomerang III which is really addictive to use.

Boomerang loopers are quite cool indeed.

The last experiment I did with the Voyager was inserting a Tech 21 character series in the pre-filter loop. I love when synths sound guitarish, but with overdrive/distorsion gain, the envelopes become less accurate. This insert loop is the good solution for altering the character and keeping control of the contour :)

Those who are new to the Voyager should check out "Kicking It Up A Notch" on KnobTweak for tips and ideas for exploring the overdrive effect. The 'Kicking' article has been around for a while, but is still very relevant on the many ways that the Voyager can be configured for the OD/Distortion effect.
