How Many Voyagers?

Post by Brad » Fri Jun 03, 2011 9:40 am

The recent threads on the possibility of Chinese made Moogs and the new Lunar Impact model got me thinking: how many Voyagers are made a year, how many overall have been made, and how are serial numbers assigned?

I bought my Performer model in 2004. It is serial no. 1733. At the time, the only other model available was the Signature Edition. I'm guessing the Signatures were assigned something like nos. 1-1000. The Performers perhaps started at no. 1001. With the new Lunar Impact starting at Serial no. 1, I assume each new configuration (EB, Fire, etc.) probably started at no. 1 as well.

Now, we all love our Voyagers. But a $3000 monophonic synth is a product with limited appeal. I'm figuring my Performer was the 733th made. Given early demand, I'm guessing they sold a 1000 Voyagers total a year or so the first year or two. I suspect that number has dropped to, maybe, 500 Voyagers a year total. I'm estimating that 5,000 ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) total Voyagers have been made and sold since the beginning.

I've followed Moog for years and have visited the Asheville facility a few times so I'm generally aware of their production capabilities. I realize these numbers could be wildly wrong. Anybody else have any ideas?

Are the serial numbers for a model necessarily in sequential order? They appear to be in a block, but the 773rd machine may not be numbered 733. Its all a Big Secret...
I've stopped talking now.
