New Voyager owner (Moog/Rhodes video)

Post by drcarver » Sat Feb 26, 2011 8:10 pm

Well I finally pulled the trigger on a Voyager! I've been playing it nonstop for the past 24hrs, and decided to post a short clip of some noodling with my trusty Rhodes piano.

Man I really really enjoyed that!
There is nothing in this world like a Moog and a Rhodes.

Your playing was fabulous.

Nice job. Very Chick/Spyro Gyra like but with your own touch.

Truer words have never been spoken. :)

Glad you guys dig it. I'm angry at myself for putting off buying the voyager for as long as I did. What an amazing synth. Plus the Moog customer service is tough to beat!

I like the color scheme also.

What year is your rhodes? I "inherited" (read claimed) a 71 suitcase seventy-three

This is an old pic:

It's a 79' suitcase. I got lucky and found it in a local music store. Apparently it was owned by an old lady who never touched it. It was pretty much mint, but was in desperate need of a tuning/voicing...once I got started, I ended up replacing screws, grommets, damper felt, hammer tips, tolex, grille cloth, and added the backcheck mod.

Here's a couple of pics, although I recently repainted the lid to the cream color in the video.

Nice set up. You'll love the Voyager the more you it.

Have you down the PE update on your Prophet ? If not do it :), Makes it like a new synth,

Thanks :)

I made sure to get the PE edition, after reading about the problems with the old knobs. The prophet is a cool synth for sure...I use it mostly for pads and little synthy bits that sit further back in the mix. It definitely has a "distinctive" sound. IMHO, the voyager blows it away when it comes to leads though. I think they will compliment each other nicely.

Very fine work ! Hard to believe that you "just got" your voyager- You have a really nice touch with it. And while I have never played a Rhoades, I am in awe at the sustain and tone. An excellent combination indeed !
Thanks !

^Thanks for the kind words. There's nothing like a real Rhodes. They can be a pain to maintain/transport, but once you play the real deal, its tough to go back to the emulations (although there are some good ones out there these days). Luckily, mine mostly stays in the studio, so the maintenance is minimal. As EricK already stated, there is something magical about the Moog/Rhodes combo.

Great Stuff! D minor is my favorite scale!

I'd really like to know what exactly happens at 1:48!
What chord do you play in the left hand (seems to contain a c#) and what scale in the right?
I really like this effect (seems to be the same at 2:41) and also heard it on 70's fusion records but never understood what happens.

Thanks! I had to go back and listen to that one. That's a diminished lick that I like and do in a few different variations depending on the context. Basically, it is a Gdim scale over an F#maj 7th. I know there are a few extra notes thrown in there in the clip though. When I get a chance, I'll try to pick through the video and send you the exact notes if I can. :P
