headphones connected directly to the output of a pedal might not be best.

Ideally, you'd have a mixer (easily find some 2/4 channel used mixers online for relatively inexpensive)
And if you can score one with an AUX send, even better...

Hopefully, this isn't over your head, but this is definitely a safe and more flexible route to go.
