How do you sync your Mother 32 to your DAW without MIDI?

Hello. I have the original Apogee Ensemble (Firewire) interface. I’m using it with Logic X. I’m wondering how I can sync tempos between Logic X and my Mother 32 without MIDI? The Apogee has the optical S/SPDIF in/out jacks (which I have never used), which is what they recommend to use with synths in the manual. But no indication of how to sync with any other synth that doesn’t have those.

Any recommendations? I have tried sending metronome clicks through the headphone jack to my old Juno 60’s “Arpeggio Clock In” jack with very mixed results. Hoping there is a more efficient way out there. Or do I need to think about updating to a different interface with MIDI outs?

So upon further investigation it seems what I am missing here is a MIDI/USB Interface. I’m looking into this Mio one made by iConnecticty. It’s cheap.

Any other recommendations?
