Pitch bend range

I found the details for changing the pitch bend range in the manual but I'm not sure I understand them - I assume someone here must have done this?
Looks like I just go into a DAW and then send three sequential MIDI messages with the controllers and values as described in the manual? Does this change the default +/- octave range until I power it off or does what I send become the new default range until changed again with the same process?
