Mother v Boomstar v XS v SE-02?
Mother v Boomstar v XS v SE-02?
I'm looking for a new analog synth. My first and only synth is a DSI mopho module. It sounds great and works flawlessly with my midi gear, but it is difficult to design sounds because most of the parameters can only be reached through menu diving, which I've found that I really hate to do. I love my MF-104m and MF-108m, so I've taken a look at the mother 32 which sounds great in the demos with 2 or 3 working together. But I'm not crazy about having to use all those wires to get the sound of a multi oscillator synth. So I've also taken a look at the Studio Electronics Boomstar module series, and the Future Retro XS both of which have multiple oscillators, are about the same price as 2 mothers, and sound fabulous to my ears. Then this week along comes the Roland SE-02 which looks like it was modeled after a minimoog with a sequencer for less than the cost of one mother....what's the catch? So many choices, which way do I go!? I'm wondering if any of you could share your experiences with using any of these synthesizers. Thanks.

If you don't like wires, then Mom is probably not for you. The new SE-02 will polychain so you can get as much polyphony as you are willing to spend for. From what I've heard on the web, it sounds like an SE-1, which is a good thing!
Re: Mother v Boomstar v XS v SE-02?
Yeah, the SE-02 looks fantastic in the video. But I'm wondering how they can offer so much synthesizer for only $500? We'll have to see what others post about build quality etc.

The design is Studio Electronics and the manufacture is Roland. I'm going to guess it is very high quality, The Korg Minilogue is the same price and it is excellent (different beast). I don't think the price is going to indicate anything about the quality of the SE-02. YMMV.
Re: Mother v Boomstar v XS v SE-02?
Cool Thx. A budding musician I was talking to has the minilogue and loves it. He told me he would go for 2 Mom's and patch between them for multiple VCO's, VCF's, envelopes, LFO's, and sequencers...and that learning how to patch is easy. I've been looking into and it seems much easier than I thought.

Two Moms = $1300 has two voices. One SE-02 = $500 has 4 voices. I'm just sayin'.

That's an interesting comparison. You seem to know a lot about this. Do you know where Roland manufactures the SE-2?

That would be quite a feat for a 3-oscillator instrument!mmarsh100 wrote:Two Moms = $1300 has two voices. One SE-02 = $500 has 4 voices. I'm just sayin'.
The SE-02 is monophonic.
You may be thinking of the other Roland Boutique instruments which are digital and have four voices.
Moog stuff: Slim Phatty, Minitaur, Mother-32, Werkstatt x2, MF-103, MF-104M, MF-108M

Embarrassing I was thinking of the mentioned Monologue I think!
Re: Mother v Boomstar v XS v SE-02?
Hey mmarsh100, do you know where the se-2 is manufactured?
